    SSD's and Raid 0... hmmm

I am building a PC for a friend and feel like giving an SSD a go.

I was thinking of using one as the OS drive (in this case XP) and a F1 hdd for other progs and
data. However they are either stupidly expensive i.e the intel ones or if cheap suffer from stuttering
ala the OCZ cores. Having said that I have read that they stutter due to how XP, vista, etc are
optimised for HDDs but a few reg tweaks sorts this out.

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=42487

If I do get one (say the ocz core V2 30 GB) how should I set up the install. Should I move the
page file to the HDD because of slower writes, would installing some of the common progs he
uses on the SSD be a good idea (firefox, office, cubase, doesnt do games).

Because of the slow writes with these things would raid 0 be of benefit. Would the intel southbridge
raid be good enough for this, how much more performance would there be with a proper raid card.
    (one under £50)

If you did get one move all the random writes to a mechanical drive - so page file, temp files, cookies etc.

RAID 0 would be of benefit, both in the writing and effective increasing of cache. The intel southbridge RAID would be fine.

Don't forget that swapping to a flash drive is a quick way to kill it, as well as being slow. This is where I believe Vista's ReadyBoost is severely misguided.

I take it you mean having a swap file on it will wear it out quicker.

Re: SSD's to get one or not... hmmm

i thought the whole rewrite limit was debunked a while ago, some research estimated that ssds being written to 27/7 would last longer than a regular hd

Yeah, but they're at least 3 times slower than a mechanical drive.

I think that's slightly different to the OCZ core series that the OP is talking about...

If your planning to use the PC in a car or in areas of high shock and vibration do get one.

If not, don't waste your time and money.

Even if considering car use, a 2.5" might still be more suitable with a little shock mounting.

I read up on the OCZ a month or so ago and was fairly impressed but didn't have any cash spare.

The really high end ones are.

The thing is the price point of these is still prohibitive for many users.

kalniel, i know the op wasn't talking about the X25-E, my point is there are some SSDs out there that are actually brilliant, they are worth waiting for to come into price range imo.

Oh, if they ever do come in price range, then hell yes, SLC drives are stunning.
