When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
When did the internet becoming so demanding on old processor? The main PC failed so i decide to pull out the emergency Pc from the shed. Reinstalled windows XP. Now this PC was capable of surfing the web back in the day(2003), but not so much now.
I'm using a 2.4GHZ celeron and it runs at 100% with site Adds on, with a Add blocker it runs at 42% max.
I've made sure it's the firefox exe, which it is. Is this a problem with my pc or is this just normal?
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
It depends on the web site, a lot ave become very blaoted now
Also the simple change in performance means we forget how we use to so much slower.
Memory demands have increased quite a bit and so has antivirus software.
One of the major drawbacks of the recently (over the past 2 years) increase in pc power means that a lot of software has got far more bloated.
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
Its generally flash that slows things down.
Ununstall flash, or use flashblock etc to avoid running it.
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
Yeah, it's most likely Flash adverts, etc. Flash is a total joke with respect to the resources it requires to produce some mediocre moving graphics.
Flashblock addon for firefox is the way forward. All flash is blocked unless you click on it.

How do Atom processors surf the net then? Are they faster then a 2.4GHz Celeron?

Probably some sites that is occasionally Flash heavy the Celeron won't cope with.
Atom is perfectly fine for surfing standard websites. I have yet to see Firefox lag unless I open multiple tabs at the same time.
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
Also memory, most netbooks have 1gb as standard (although some only 512mb)
Flash block does help :) so does script blocking as that stops most java which is the other biggy
Although loads of websites no longer load correctly until I let the flash or java objects through.
But my eeepc 901 is less responsive than my desktop even with linux.
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
How does the Atom 1.6GHz compare to the Celeron 2.4GHz - I hear it should be faster - is this because of a new architecture (higher instructions per clock rating) or a higher FSB / larger cache or all combined?

How much RAM is in the PC, have you checked task manager at idle & on the net to see if its anything like the AV & Firewall sucking up all the RAM?

1GB, 725Mb Free. I'm using windows firewall and have yet to install a AV program
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
Okay, its not he RAM then...
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
My PowerMac G5 (dual 2.7) with 2.5Gb RAM stuggled on some websites. Even just games on sites like pog.com, it would go really jerky at times.
I wouldn't have thought you'd need a fast PC to go online but it just shows you get used to faster computers and when you go on anything slower than what you're used to you really feel it.
Re: When did the internet demanding on old Processor?
Noscript - blocks all javascript unless you allow it.
Adblock plus - blocks all ads
Flashblock - blocks all flash unless you allow it.
Those 3 might help you browse without any annoying things which you don't want to see slowing you down.
