Crazy CPU temps on my 1yr old laptop *pic*

I've noticed my laptop fan is kicking in more and more, i use the laptop on a table and checked out the temps on speedfan:



I looked at the fan and it looks ok, not very dusty, i dont know what else could have changed?

Sounds like it to me. My mates had a carpet of dust on the fins blocking the airflow.

i tried to get a good look at it and i think you're right, the fan is going full speed but the air coming out isnt a great deal. i'll try and open it up tonight and clear it out

yeh, keep that laptop off until you've cleared it out ... maybe the heatsink has been knocked off the cpu

Also depends on what laptop you use.
Most laptops have horrible heatsinks that:
1) Slightly tilted or raised so no perfect contact
2) Use crappy thermal paste / pad
3) Have a crappy fan.

My NAS laptop's fan is alright but have the 1) problem. It idles at 52'C and loads at 73'C. If it is dusty it could go up to 85'C load. I've had it running x264 encodings for weeks non-stop at 100% and it was fine at that kind of temperature. Just don't leave your battery in there.

Another way of cooling it down is to use RMClock and tune the idle / full load voltage. Without RMClock that laptop very often hit 90'C.
Full load voltage is generally 3-6 clicks from the lowest possible.

Wow, those temps were high. Lucky you didn't use it on your lap!

You should buy a tin of compressed air and give it a blow-out every month/couple of weeks to keep the air way clean. Save you opening it up to clear it out.
