Monitor aspect ratio woes.
Are we seeing the death of the 16:10 monitor?
All the new monitors seem to have the TV standard 16:9 ratio. I don't like 16:9 on a computer monitor, the only reason it works on a TV is because movies often come in 2.35:1 flavour, and the extra width of the screen helps a little.
Has the world forgotten about the golden ratio, phi? 16:10 monitors hit pretty close to the magic number (about 1.6180340) which is one reason why they just look right.
I hope we haven't seen the last of the almost perfect monitors...

Couldn't agree more. There are some impressive 16:9 monitors out there like the Dell 2309 but I just don't like that resolution for anything but watching movies on. It doesn't feel right.

You can still buy 4:3 monitors today.

Sorry to say this but the days of the 16:10 monitor are very limited!! :( The reason is that manufacturers are probably trying to merge both the PC and consumer AV LCD production into one to save money. Having to produce both 16:9 consumer and 16:10 computer LCD panels must mean a replication of labour in their view. Also for most people it means that the computer monitor will have a better aspect ratio for watching their movies on!!
I can only see that only potentially higher end 16:10 models surviving if there is demand from commercial and professional sectors for them. I also prefer 16:10 ratio LCDs BTW!

16:9 monitor would be too "long" for anyone liking to work in pivot mode (rotate the scree in 90 degree).
I always prefer 4:3 monitor for PC, notebook and table pc.
