New NB Heatsink

Iv been overclocking my Q6600 and when i bump the NB voltage above 1.38 the temps are hitting above 70 when under stress test. Now i know that in reality the chances of normal usage reaching these temps the CPU was hitting 3.4 at 1.33V with only 62c under load so im feelin confident i can get 3.5 or even 3.6 which would be pretty fantastic for air cooling but i really need to tame the NB temps. the problem im facing is the space available thanks to my Ultima. Here are some pics





I have 3 intake fans, one in the front (enermax twister controlled by the temp of the GFX) one in the hard drive rack (1400 Akasa, which is in the 5.25 bay) and one mounted to the side of the case (enermax 92mm controlled by the system fan port)

I was thinking of getting this or the non SLI version and putting an 80mm sharkoon golfball 2000 on it. I was also thinking of removing the 92mm intake and changing the hard drive intake for a 120mm yate loon fan i have and put that on the system controller instead.

Do you guys think i could get the thermalright to fit and do you have any suggestions for improving airflow? im probs going to get a dremel and mod my case a bit, ie remove the fan grilles and add some proper vents to the front of the case.

Hi there,

Im sure that that thermalright NB cooler would work, though you may need to remove the mobo to fit it and im not sure how you would orientate it. The pics dont make it exactly clear what the clearance you have over the abit NB chipset, I know that with my TRUE and the stock gigabyte heatsinks I have room for a 40mm NB fan, its really tight, but it fits, you might be able to do that, it will help a lot. Otherwise any improvements you can make in the case like getting some 120mm fans in there will help also.

I adjusted my fans and still no joy. My try and get a 40mm fan to blow over the NB see if that helps. TBH i just wanna change ALL the fans in my case but i dont have the cash atm

I had a bit of a warm northbridge on my DFI motherboard.

As a temporary solution I found that the fan from a AMD 939 cooler when screwed off the heatsink fits perfectly inbetween my PCI-E graphics card and the Arctic Cooler 7 Cooler.

This has dropped the NB temps considerably and allowed me to increase the FSB to 450 Mhz

i actually have a 939 cooler (opteron) but its at home, is the fan not just standard 80mm? iv tried slotting one in there but it wudnt fit

Thermalright HR05 may well fit it fitted on my G33M-DS2R next to an Ultima 90 see pic below to see



it fits because it isn't as wide as a normal NB heatsink.

Nice, is there enough room for a 80mm fan too? or have the temps dropped enough for it not to matteR?

I ran it passive with the CPU at 3.5Ghz (500*7) but with such a small case (Silverstone TJ08) the was a pretty high airflow through the case I think a fan would probably have fitted but I never tried.

As to temps the board does not have an on board sensor I had a foil sensor taped on the base of the heatsink connected to my fan controller when the stock heatsink was on it was hitting mid 60's with the HR05 it was mid 40's so I was happy that it was keeping it a lot cooler.

Ok iv just got a refund from someone on paypal after waiting like 4 months so im thinking i might get myself a new case and some new fans rather than trying to hack away at this one.

I'd just have both top fans venting air out...

well my reasoning for using it as an intake is that cold air sinks and its infront of the CPU fan so im hoping if i did it that way iut would blow cold air directly into the CPU cooler. I would have thought if i used it as an extractor it would just pull air away from the CPU cooler.

Edit - i havent bought it yet so im open to any changes if anyone can suggest some.

TBH, i don't think it would make much difference either way...

It may be worth a test if you opt for that stuff
