    Are the AMD fans slipping?

I'm surprised no-one has said anything about the 6.5GHz PhenomII story thats been floating around for the past couple of days.

Given that I just tried to claim that a sub £300 laptop on ebuyer was the first retail Yukon, I'd say that we are

its just not very relevant to anyone tbh, a 4.5 on air story would be far....cooler?

I'm sure if an i7 went to 6.5GHz, there would have been a HEXUS.headline about it though.

Its not very exciting unless the average user can attempt it, not everyone has Liquid Nitrogen lying around you know!

Re: Are the AMD fans slipping?

I am able to get hold of ln2, but whether it would be possible to use the computer or not while keeping the cpu ln2 cooled is another question

I am considering a phenom II for my next build though

It made the hexus homepage when they LN2 cooled an i7 and hit 4GHz with it... Although interestingly the i7 crashed out below about -160 (iirc). Can anyone who's bothered enough to watch the video tell us whether they had to run any extra-special tweaks in BIOS / setup to keep the CPU running at such a low temperature? Or are Phenom IIs just inherently more stable at very low temperatures? (I would watch the video myself, but I'm at work )

Re: Are the AMD fans slipping?

So...when does this become an everyday overclock?

It's all very nice hitting silly speeds with liquid nitrogen and then liquid helium but..in reality with water or air cooling, what kind of speeds can people expect? If they set a record of air cooled, that'll be really interesting as most of us can have a go.

As a PR stunt, kudos to AMD.

Re: Are the AMD fans slipping?

If you want an idea of what you can achieve with a given chip, use Google to search for the chip (e.g. amd 940) on the website http://valid.canardpc.com/ and it'll give you results for what validated results have been achieved.

It doesn't tell you what cooling is used but there are 4 pages of results for the 940 currently with a lot of overclocks in the 4 - 6.5Ghz range.

Seeing as I'm interested too I might compile the results later to see what sort of average there it.

From a quick google of phenom II overclock air it looks like somewhere around 4GHz is possible.

    For anybody who's interested:

That's a total of 37 results, which isn't enough on its own to draw any real conclusions about limits and the like, since the cooling used isn't given.

Perhaps it's not enough for a quantitative analysis, but factoring in results from known air-cooling OCs I think it's fair to assume that the peak around 3.8 - 4.2 GHz is likely to be from air-cooled set ups. Also, I suspect that air-cooled OCs are a lot less sensitive to the exact set up being used, so you'd expect the results of air-OC to cluster more than esoteric cooling systems.

Sorry, I work with researchers and analysts, so I need practice for the next set of meeting

No worries jim, it's probably a safe assumption given all the information available. It would definately match the marketing slides AMD used for this chip too.

Actually it was 5.5ghz or something similar, 4ghz+ can be done on air.
