The 920 is multiplier locked so you have to overclock by raising the core bus speed of the processor above the default 200MHz. The 940 is multiplier unlocked, so you can simply increase the multiplier, adjust the bus, or a combination of the two. From what (little) I've seen the 920 will overclock almost as far as the 940 on air cooling; although be warned that there isn't much data out there on the 920 overclocking (most people OCing have gone for the 940). There's a thread on these forums debating Phenom II overclocking that might be worth reading if you're not sure. For my money, if you're planning on and confident about OCing, I'd save the money and go for the 920.
Also, I have to echo everyone else and say buy the 4850X2 from ebuyer; you get free delivery with their supersaver shipping option...
Re: What do you think of this build
I'm still not sure if i should go for ATI or the green team on the graphics front.
Thank you format for the HDD pointer.
Also I was wondering if I could get some opinions on motherboards. Should I be going for the Asus, a DFI or an MSI and what makes a good motherboard?
Re: What do you think of this build
Go for ATi. If you're running a Phenom II and a 790GX motherboard then you'll get a little boost by adding in a 4800 series card, all three are designed to work in sync.
With the 920 vs 940 there's not really much difference. The unlocked multiplier of the 940 just makes overclocking easier and more consistant, you don't get significantly higher results.
Re: What do you think of this build
I would go for the 920, at £155 its a great deal, and heat will limit your overclock long before the chip itself, as you are using the Arctic Freezer.....
I would also probs go with the 4850X2, their sudden price drop has made them a great deal.
(I just hope nvidia drop the prices of their 260/280)
Re: What do you think of this build
I think I stated previously, if I didnt Im sorry that for the moment I wont over clock as I doubt I will have the need but should I have to do so i would upgrade the heatsink. Thank you for the further input but can someone please tell me what makes a good motherboard lol
Re: What do you think of this build
If you plan on clocking the phenom get some PC2-8500+ instead.
Also get the BFG card for the better warrenty/customer service
