Adaptor card advice...

Hi guys,

I'm looking for an adaptor card and I think I have found one that would be the best I could go for, for what I'm going to be getting to use with it.
But before I go nuts, could someone give me any advice or a different product suggestion to go for?

I've seen it cheaper else where (but I was wondering since I'd be ordering some SSD's to go with it, these in particular - http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/30GB-...-s-Write-speed and possibly upto 8 in total - in time, not all at once!!) I was wondering is it a good buy for the card for future proofing or could I get away with something cheaper or not as good?

I've been reading up that 4 or more SSD's (the same models) on the 2405 card tends to overheat and doesnt do a great deal in performance, which led me to the 5805...

Thoughts, suggestions would be most welcome

Well... if you're going nuts on RAID adapters then have you considered any ARECA based adapters as they are usually the most recommended for a RAID controller...

otherwise, the 5805 is one of Adaptecs high end products and most reviews that I've seen have generally been very good so not a bad choice at all really.

I've had a 5405 for about a year now running 4 1TB Samsung F1 drives and had no problems with it at all.

Well I've had a read of a review that had the 5805 up against a ARECA card that was nearly double the price and the 5805 beat it. I know they are a very good card but I'm wondering if there was something better around the price range...

If there's not, then I guess I'll just have to get my SCSI and SAS hardware and drives sold and then I'll be making a jump into the 5805 and upto 4 SSD's to start with

I was very lucky when I picked up my 5405 last year as it was a clearance item and I bagged it new for 120 squids. Very Very happy with it!!

if I could afford it, I would go for the 5805!!




I'm not heading into SSD territory anytime soon but maybe you should look for SLC type SSDs rather than MLC if you're looking for the most performance and longevity.

Probably someone else care to comment more on SSDs?

I dont worry to much about what things cost because if I buy something thats not quite what I want, then I'll have to buy again which will cost me even more in the long term! So I just go with what I should buy rather than what my wallet can handle!

Judging by the SSD reviews I have read of the drives I've mentioned, they do seem the better type for the price. I know that £110 for 30Gb is high but with the performance of 4 of these things in Raid 0 I'd say its worth it

I'm a gamer and bencher so I think it'll be worth the money for me, but I do know its a little OTT for my needs, but we'll see

well, if that's how you operate then fair enough i suppose!

I got the RAID adapters for my storage server so my needs are rather different. I recently picked up a 2nd hand 16 port Adaptec ICP5165 (former revision of the 5805) and using that and the 5405 in the same system for current/future storage.

As for those OCZ vertex MLC SSDs, they look quite good for the price... esp considering SLC equivalents are 3-4 times the price!!

Novatech had/have cheap SLC drives from samsaung for like £70 iirc...

Well I've found that if I only spend small amounts I end up having to pay out even more in the long term because its not what I really wanted!!

So I figure do it this way and it should save me a bit of cash

I'm going to hold out buying any drives at the moment since there is a release of newer models coming out which should hopefully lower the prices down for me
