Hello people of hexus, i currently have the intel stock heatsink, ive been looking at the arctic cooler freezer pro, im a bit concerned about heatsink though because my motherboard appears to have very little control over the speed of the fan on there, can you spec me an air cooler of decent standard plz?

    Asus p5q-l pro
    4gb xms2 800mhz

Cant go far wrong with a noctua and one of their low noise adapters if its noise that is the problem for you.

Xigmatek if you're on a budget. Have a google for the S1283, great cooler and well priced.

Re: Spec me an air cooler

Unfortunately the S1283 is getting a bit pricey now £27.50 on Scan (the red scorpian is a bit cheaper but is not in stock at the moment) For that you can get a Thermalright Ultima 90 and a Fan or for a little bit more a Scythe Ninja 2.

I would take the Thermalright personally.

That's a bit strange; the Red Scorpion comes with a better fan and the backplate.

Re: Spec me an air cooler

Actually the new Arctic Cooling Freezer xtreme has gotten some good reviews and is a good price, esp since the cost of the Xigmatek's has gone up

EDIT: I'd not go for the old Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, while good of the low temps of a c2d the fan really speeds up to keep a hotter cpu like a c2quad cool and it's not that good for value any more.

Re: Spec me an air cooler

One thing to note is your case size, esp for older cases.
All of these tower coolers that use a 120mm fan while performing well and keeping sound levels down, do however stick out a good way from the motherboard and not all older cases are wide enough to fit them.
If your case is 200mm (or more) wide you "should" be ok, any narrower and it's a no go.

I have a coolermaster cm 690 with 6 120mm fans (2 of them being on the side panel) its pretty wide and deep so it shouldnt be that much of a hassle.

Re: Spec me an air cooler

    Nope a CM690 is fine

Although you will have to remove the upper of the two side panel fans as it gets in the way and blowing on to the top of a tower cooler is pritty pointless any way.

Thinking about it the Freezer 7 pro will probably be ok for a stock Q6600 but you may need to go into the bios and select 3 pin fan for the cpu. I had to do this on my mobo other wise it runs the fan full speed all the time.

Cheers mate , great cooler. Easy to install especially if you have a thermalright bolt through kit and very cool. My Q6600 B3 is idling at 25c and load with prime 95 (small ftt) at 50c.
