    HP Laptop hard drive.

Is there anything special about HP laptop hard drives? It's a Hitachi drive but, when I connected it to my desktop it was not detected by the BIOS.

The laptop does nothing and I thought it was a BIOS problem but, now I'm not so sure. When powered up the screen stays blank and sometimes it gives 2 beeps. I did get it to start once and it was trying to repair files on the hard drive then stopped with a failure report.

When I did manage to get into the BIOS on the laptop it only had two options either test memory or test hard drive but, since then I've not managed to get it to do anything.

Try powering it up without the hard drive in, that should get you to the bios

As to the hard drives, nope nothing special at least in any of the Hp laptops I've replaced the HD in
Sometimes there is a hidden partition with a recovery image on it but that's it.
Hitachi drives seem common to many laptops.
if the pc cannot detect it my guess is it's dead.

That's what I think but, even without the hard drive the laptop does not show anything on the screen, A few times its beeped 2 times.

You didn't happen to knock anything while taking the HD out? Like the memory?

Sound like there is also an issue with the laptop motherboard as well, I do hope it's in warranty because if not that's a very expensive repair
Laptops are one of the few things I do sugest takeing out extended warranties on because the parts are so damb expensive.

Fortunately, It's not mine. I was just asked to have a quick look and see what I thought was wrong with it.

Just seems strange that the BIOS (laptop) does not appear to be working(nothing showing on Screen) and the hard drive seems dead too (when connected to the PC).

    Re: HP Laptop hard drive.

My guess something major went on the motherboard and took the HD with it or it was dropped.

Strangely enough "have it been dropped" seems to be one of the standard questons you get asked when calling tech support phone lines about laptop issues (I've been asked it by hp, dell and toshiba)

PS just an FYI I recently had a quote from HP to replace a laptop motherboard £325ish I seem to remember (not at work so cannot look it up)
