    dodgy HDD

hey guys, im attempting to get some data of a friends external hdd that seems to be not spinning up properly.. symptoms are; once connected via usb or directly to mobo via SATA the drive repeatedly revs, then after a while just stops. the light on the enclosure stays on even through the drive has stopped spinning and windows doesn't acknowledge it in any way.
Is it freezer time or has anyone got any other bright ideas? thanks.

Open the drive enclosure and connect the drive directly.

Sorry, You said "the light on the enclosure stays on even through the drive has stopped spinning..." Which made me think you was still using it in the caddy, Enclosure or whatever you want to call it.

Are you connecting directly to the Disk drive itself rather than a connection on an external drive enclosure? Is the drive SATA or SATA 2 ?

    Re: dodgy HDD

If the data on it is really important, Sometimes you can swap the circuit board with the board on another identical drive. Assuming that it is the board that's failed and not mechanical parts of the drive.

Other than that I can't suggest anything.
