Samsung SH-S203B not reading CDs/DVDs anymore

Not sure why but it's suddenly stopped reading any CDs of DVDs. I can see it flashing and it tries to initialise the CD/DVD but it just doesn't recognise the disc in the drive.

I've tried the same DVDs and CDs on my other PC which has an older version of the same drive and they all work perfectly straight away.

Is there anything I can try to sort this? I've rebooted multiple times and have uninstalled/reinstalled the drive using the device manager.

It's never really been 100% since day one, so I'm guessing it might have finally given up.

I'm guessing it could be something to do with the drivers - the drive always used to be picked up as a DVD-RAM but it's now only picked up as a DVD-RW.

Hardware rather than drivers I think. Seen this behaviour before. Should have RMA'd it if it wasn't working perfectly at the start.

Some years ago I bought a Samsung optical drive that was faulty and the replacement was also faulty, Needless to say I've never bought another one since.

You tried some other cables? I would ditto the above that it's probably a bad drive but it's worth swapping a few things around. You could try putting the drive in the other pc as well in case your mobo has a dodgy sata port/bad bios or something.

Thing is the symptoms were very seldom, most of the time the drive was perfect meaning if I RMA'd the drive it'd probably be sent straight back to me & I'd possibly be charged for checking fees if they didn't find a fault.

Have you had a look for a later revision of the firmware? or Maybe try re-flashing with the same version of firmware?

The latest version I found was vSB04 released in may 2008.

Yep, I went to SB04 to test, then back to SB00 and now I'm on SB04 again.
