Whats there average MTBF, for an 80 and a 200giger ?? mine are both 3 - 4 months old and been fine...so far. Think the 200 can hold out for say 1 - 1.5 years (haha) ??

It's really depressing that the industry std warranty for an IDE HD is only 1 year, really sucks. I'm not sure of MTBF (certainly independent) but I hear that Maxtor are very reliable HOWEVER if you do have to return one (and are lucky enough to be in warranty) you'll have to RMA it all the way to Rep Ireland signed, a good 3-4 times what you'd pay to any British destination. You get severe lack of correspondence and a lot of details to fill in but the replacement is good (60GB replaced with 80GB for eg) and the whole process in my experience is less than 2 weeks. I trust Maxtor most with WD and Seagate close seconds.
good to hear! Was just wondering if I should have paid the extra for 2x WDs....
Bought an 80Gig Maxtor just over a year ago and has been fine so far. Got another one for data backups about 6 months ago and that is fine too, so far.
Also bought a 40Gig for the GFs machine and that is still going too....
All are 5400 rpm...

I don't know about the specific MTBF figures for the individual lines of products, but Maxtor's IDE drives have always had good reliability, certainly one of the better ones. Their SCSI products are good also, since it carried on the tradition of Quantum's strong SCSI line.

Since the big manf moved back to a 1 year warranty, I dont use anything but WD 8MB Cache jobbies with the 3 year warranty...
Just food for thought...
all my hardrives are maxtors ive got a 40gig a 60gig and an 80gig and never had a problem with any of em
Your lucky, out of 10 I previously bought for myself and customers as such, at least three went back (all bought from different suppliers). Touch wood, I have never sent a WD back at all...(in the past 10 years!).
maxtor's have been very reliable for me, all the pcs in my house use maxtor hard drives.
I've had (and still use) 4 Maxtors. The two oldest are now 6 years old 2Gigers. 2 survived the powercut that killed of a seagate :/
Hmm, well, nice to see some people have had nice experiences with maxtors. I always used them, but my latest drives were a real disaster: 80gb diamondmax8 or D740X drives.
I've had to RMA seven of the frikkin things. Just as well their RMA support is as good as Agent says it is. But I believe there were serious batch problems with them. About 4 of the drives I have RMA'd were in fact replacement drives I received from Maxtor following previous failures. Nothing drastic was wrong with them, just bad sectors
Fortunately, those d740x drives have now been replaced by the diamondmax 9 series, and my latest rma'd d740x is now a DM9, so I hope my troubles with maxtor are over...
Just my two pennies. I think I wrote a long post some time ago on hexus regarding my fun and games, so you may find that if you really want to find out how fustrated I have truly been with those drives
I have 6 Maxtors and 1 WD. The WD is a replacement for a 40GB that died while still under warranty (2 years 11 months believe it or not). It was in a Dell Dimension XPS and Dell replaced it no problem.
All the Maxtors are original and still work. The oldest is a 20GB that is 4-5 years old, two 40GBs that are 3+, and three nearly new 160GBs.
I have had real good luck with Maxtor so "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
i have a maxtor in my p166 WITH MMX its a 512 MB and has lasted for about 10 years (i was my first pc) it still ticks away reliably as my ntserver (basicly a NAT router box) but in something more modern i have had 5 wd's all ok performers and cut out early in there 3 year lifes, and about 8 other maxtors. my latest max. a DimondMAX9 120gb, i acedently fired pluging it in wrong, called the rma service (arnt i naughty?) and di advaned RMA had new drive in 2 days. hasnt failed (or been forced to fail) since then, about a year ago. my 20gb WD that came with the system, only 2months older then the 120gig died...twice, and has been replaced with a lengthy process.i thinkWD needs to be ed-u-ma-cated by maxtor, i didnt need my recipt(thank god, i lost it) for my maxxy but i did, for my WD, and they actualy called and accused me of a counterfit! recipt!!!! after a 2month debacle with WD i got a new 20gig drive(POS) and a 'sorry' letter!! only WD im gona buy from now on is a pair of raptors for my new box, then wait for the new 300gb maxtor monstors @7200rpmw/8mb cache...oh BTW MAXTOR is the way to go, there scsi's are top-notch
Guys! I'm still using 2 harddrives only 20gig a piece (19.8 on both to be exact). I still have at least 25gigs Free too!
