XP is getting slower again :(

    I'm really carefull with what I install......and I have a defrag (!) everyweek......and a clean up.......BUT....

    its getting slwo again.

Whats the way of seeing what boots up on Startup?

Only Zonealarm is in the Start up box in Programs.....

I dont like it like this......I feel another install due...BUT.....

What can I do to make it better?

SCSI with 2 HDD at the mo.....Games and Music on one, XP install and associated "permanent features" on the faster other.

    XP 1700+ at way over 2gig (12.5 x 180)

It makes me sad when it starts to slow down and I need to begin again

Get BootVis, there might be something slowing down the whole bootup... a driver or something

erm, seriously, msconfig is fine, does everything that proggy does and more (boot.ini, win.ini, system.ini, and selective startups), and it's already in windows..

Is MSCONFIG in all vers of Windows? I thought selective startup was more for trouble-shooting than permanently disabling programs. Anyway, you can look in the Start Menu under STARTUP or edit the following registry entry...

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run

EDIT: If your system is slowing down and you use WinME or prior then check the System Resources, they should be over 80%. Other things which could be causing problems are unsigned / beta drivers, hw which is sometimes present and other times not, hw/network timeouts or viruses (esp the latest 32blaster virus).

Yup, been in most versions of windows for donkeys.

msconfig and the other tool mentioned above both access those same registry settings anyway

A vote here against fiddling with bootvis. I've tried to get results out of it and failed on 3 systems, once causing a longer boot time and another killing my XP install completely.

A vote for checking whats getting turned on at startup with msconfig. I was annoyed to find that even though I had disabled Nividia help system in system.msc it was still classified as running because it was there ticked in msconfig.

Have you checked out disabling unnecessary XP services Zak (such as remote registry etc)?

Also Zak, you dont quantify slow?

I downgraded my main terminal the other week from an NF7s to a KT333 board with old palomino. I didnt bother unistalling drivers, just poped the KT333 board in and let windows deal with it (I didnt think it would, but it did).

I knew it would be slow, but I've not been bothered about making it run at peak until today (got round to installing Star Wars Galaxies).

    NF7s 3DMark2001 = 13448
    KT333 XP's driver attempt = 10000ish
    New 4in1's -> 10600
Nvidia dets -> 11039 = about right for the 450hz slower cpu and memory.

I have found loads of stuff that frankly I dont know enough about to fiddle with.

Creative Audigy (no suprise) is guilty of two items, my Saitek joystick as well....and I dont even USE Saitek drivers, I use it as a default joystick

Quite unreal what there is going on
