Question A7N8X Deluxe Vcore? (Screwed thermal contact.. HELP!)

Okay, so I thought I might as well get my cpu and memory running at the same speed..

    XP2200+:
    Processor #1 : AMD Athlon XP (Model 8) / 4E2CA023
    Platform : Socket A (Socket 462)
    Vendor String : AuthenticAMD
CPU Type : Original OEM Processor (0)
    Family : 6 (7)
    Model : 8 (8)
    Stepping ID : 0 (0)

I dropped the multiplier down to 11x and cranked the fsb to 166(333ddr), it all boots and everything runs okay..

The thing is, it's running at 1.7volts, even though in the bios it's set to 1.65 on manual. Should that really be happening?

Would that have any effect on my temps? (Socket: 36°C, Diode: 56°C, Case: 20°C, PWR_FAN: 2766RPM, CPU_FAN: 5443RPM)

Or is it more likely then the cpu cooler is just plain crap?

(Yes, this the first time I've started OC-ing )

The diode temp (normally the one that reads cpu temp) is a wee bit high m8. What cooler have you got on it? If its a stock one, maybe you could upgrade it to an SLK-800 or a volcanoe. Might be worth taking it off cleaning it and applying a thin sliver of arctic silver, then put it back...

My asus a7n8x dlx overvolts by about 0.03v from what it is set to in the bios. ie 1.65 in bios = 1.68 in windows. Most motherboards over or under volt to some small extent and it is nothing to worry about.

I doubt that dropping the volts by 0.05 will make much a a difference to your cpu temp anyway!

Is your case well ventilated? As this can help bring cpu temp down.

Ventilated, umm yes, the side is off and I've got a deskfan blasting into it

Yeah, I'm suspecting the cooler is the problem, I don't think the novatech bods put it on properly with the replacement board after I rma'ed it..

It's got quite a low profile fan on it too..

What coolers do peeps recommend these days?

    Okay, took the cooler off...

Oh. My. God. What a mess! Looks like when I RMA'ed the board when they got the replacement in the monkeys at novatech didn't bother to remove all the old thermal stuff (looks like it was a tape of some kind), the just squirted some compound in the hole it made when they removed the cooler from the cpu the first time and stuck it back on...

So I've cleaned the cooler (whitespirit on cloth, followed by cloth, then damp cloth with water, then cloth again), and the processor, there's still a little bit of the white compound around the sides of the core, but it's not actually on the top..

Stuck it all back together.. and nothing.. powers on for like 4 seconds then powers off! I've made out the following message from the audio diagnostics.. "Error, Fail..." then the power turns off..

    Any ideas??

    "Error system failed memory test?"

a failure that early in the booting is usually a video or memory error.

The only thing that's changed is is the cpu, as I mentioned above, before that it was running okay, but *way* too hot, I've not even touched the memorty or gfx card..

The memory test failure message is way later than that anyway..

did you plug the CPU Heatsink fan back in?

Or have you put the fan onto the wrong fan header?

Could be auto shutdown to protect the CPU

Come on, give me a little credit It went back into the correct socket and powers up fine (along with everything else for about 4 seconds if that)..

If you are 100% that Heatsink is on
Heatsink fan is plugged into the CPU fan header

The just go though the basic routine...
    Reseat Ram
    Reseat G/fx Card

Reset Bios ( Disconnect PSU connector from Board / take Batt out
set drain jump into drain position wait 10sec Set Drain jumper
back to normal put batt back in plug PSU connector back in)

    Test again.

I get the same on mine Stoo. I am running 1.625 through my XP1700+ yet MBM5 reports 1.67 most of the time.

Living and dying laughing and crying
Once you have seen it you will never be the same
Life in the fast lane is just how it seems
Hard and it is heavy dirty and mean
