UPS Recommendation for my WHS
Having only had one hour at home this week to play with my Windows Home Server

Its really great, it was all set up and working within 20 minutes, giving simple remote access to my PCs with a bit of safety. Now my gigabit network is just bottlenecking as i copy all my data to the replicated dynamic disk thingie!
But i'd like to put it on a UPS to help it survive power blips and the like, but it dosen't draw much power at all, and i'd like something effecient!
Any recomendations?
Re: UPS Recommendation for my WHS
That's a pretty nice wee box. Anyway, pretty much any UPS will do the job, even 350VA would be plenty to deal with spikes and sags, and even full blown power cuts for a reasonable period of time.
Re: UPS Recommendation for my WHS
Oh yes, I'm really not needing much, just enough for the thing to shut itself down.
WHS software is just fantastic, it all works, no effort from me! After a day spent arm deep in horribly legacy applications which some bright spark thought we could save costs by mixing different platofrms, languages and operating systems.
I want something that also isolates the ethernet.
Re: UPS Recommendation for my WHS
Yeah. WHS would serve most people's needs. File duplication isn't perfect, but it is sufficiently redundant for again, most people's needs.
As for UPS. Perhaps something like the APC BK350EI. 350VA, has a surge filtering port for ethernet, nothing fancy, does the job, supports serial or usb power management comms, not too expensive. Only thing I'm not sure about is the DC pack, how you'd connect it to the ups... But I'm sure you can make the mechanical determinations.
Re: UPS Recommendation for my WHS
Good price, plus APC been the defacto norm make is reasure. The ticks the price OK box.
But where's the ethernet isolation, a quick froogle search:

People only talk about phone/dsl isolation

Yeah, that has me a little perplexed as well. Even the product documentation states phone/isdn/dsl/etc.. but it uses RJ-45 sockets, but doesn't elaborate if all the pins are there. Then again, as long as your router is isolated, there's no way for a surge to go through the ethernet lines.
Re: UPS Recommendation for my WHS
use powerline ethernet adaptor for the media PC in the living room. Flatmate decreed that only the cat was allowed to tear up the carpet, not me.
Re: UPS Recommendation for my WHS
Ahh, well that sucks :|
It might be worth emailing APC for a more fuller description of the product in that regard.

Aye, but she's been a very good friend to me, so no matter how much that "no" pisses me off, i'll tollerate it.
But as i've got permission to put this squash in the broom cupboard (put a shelf up the other month) and i think once she sees the neat job i do with that (recessed sockets etc) she'll allow me to lift the carpet and wire up properly!
