DVD Region Free Firmware?

I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to this, so basically I'm after a (good quality) region free firmware for my Pioneer DVD-116 DVD-ROM drive.

Am I right in understanding you have to run region-free software alongside the hacked firmware? If so, what can you recommend?

All you need to know should be in the forums there but afaik you don't need to run region free software. I don't think that the software itself has a region it just reads the disc & player regions?
