Which HDD

Being looking at getting a new HDD for my new pc and have up to £40 to spend. This will be my system drive and i've come down to these option

500 GB Hitachi 0A35415 Deskstar P7K500 @ £38.54 Scan Today Only

Western Digital WD3200AAKS Caviar SE16 @ 40.83 Scan Today Only

I'm leaning more towards the WD as i've read that the Hitachi isn't to good on random search times and bearing in mind this will be for my system drive i feel that, that might be better. Plus i seem to feel a bad vide about Hitachi on the net.

The WD is single platter, which means higher density, which means faster throughput. If you're after performance, go WD. I don't much trust Hitachi consumer drives, they inherited IBMs 'death'star range.

but "IBMs 'death'star" for me was the 80GB PATA drives not this generation and i still see one being used !!

another WD vote here although i'd say spend an extra £5 and get the 500gb samsung Spinpoint F1 or wait for it to pop up on today only where it often does at about £5 less

At that price i may as well buy it. I'd be stupid not to. I assume it's two 250gb platters.

It's two 320Gb platters, they just don't use the whole capacity.

The Samsung platters are 334Gb. hence a 3 platter 1Tb drive. You are right about them restricting the capacity though.

I recentlt bought a Hitachi 640gb HDD. It seems to be good although runs a tad warmer than the Sammy F1 (about 5 celsius)

Thats odd, my AAJS gets a higher average, and burst than the AAKS. Does go a bit spikey tho - not sure if that is due to it being in IDE mode?. I should have changed it b4 installing windows
