Wireless Vs. Wired Internet For Gaming

Hey guys, I wanted your views on this topic as I think an ethernet cable is better than wireless interent when playing games, what are your experiences with regards to this topic?

P.S. I also have a Wireless N netgear router, model is DGN2000. I think on my router it says 2.4GHz, am I right in thinking the transfer rate in Wireless N is 300mbs, and with gigabit ethernet it's a gig and thus ethernet cable would be the preferred option.

I know my question must sound really stupid but bare with me I'm a noob

Re: Wireless Vs. Wired Internet For Gaming

For gaming lower latency is more important than speed, so wired is still better for gaming.

Not really, becaused it's still wireless. Wireless never has consistent speed.

2.4GHz is the radio frequency it operates on. Just like commercial radio stations are 88 to 108MHz (Somewhere in that region, anyway).

A lot of household electronics operate on the 2.4GHz band (Give or take some hertz). Cordless phones, wireless games console controllers, etc. It's not really related to the data transfer speed.

Oh I was actually considering the killer nic aswell, seems like a really good card, i was gonna be budget and maybe get the m1, cause the k1 seemed too pricely, anyone think the K1 is much better than the m1.

Cheers for that reply KidChameleon, never knew that

Re: Wireless Vs. Wired Internet For Gaming

There's also the slight point of how fast your modem/router and your internet connection is, a 1gbs network card is all well and good, but if you router is only 100mbs then that drops the connection to the router to 100mbs, if your broadband is only 5mbs then that slows you down again.
Next thing to consider is shareing, if you've got multiple pc's/devices using the same broadband line via your router that then slows you down again.
Same for a wireless connection but more so, wired each port is seperate, wireless the all devices connecting to the router will share the one wireless connection.

Another issue with broadband is the Contention rates, if you're on a 50:1 Contention rate you'll get far more latency than a 20:1 contention rate
(Contention rate is the number of users shareing the same line, ie if you're 50:1 then you're shareing it with 49 other households)

The Killer NIC while it looks very funky I'm really not sure how much benefit it'll be when internet gameing.
Would probably be better to check you broadband package first.

EDIT: I'm not fully up on wireless connection types but I think you'd also need both router and wireless card to be N to make use of the full speed of it, however it is backwards compatable so if one end is the older B or G type it would still connect ok juet at the lower speed/latency

Re: Wireless Vs. Wired Internet For Gaming

Killer NIC is pointless, with Internet gaming it is your Broadband that is going to be introducing any significant latency not your wired or wireless network.

As Pob says you will need a Wireless N router/Access point and dongle/card together to get the 300Mbps otherwise if your PC has only G it will be limited to 54Mbps (still a helluva lot faster than your broadband).

As to contention ratios unless you are on a business package you are likely on 50:1 although some providers may be less.

Re: Wireless Vs. Wired Internet For Gaming

Hey thanks for that info guys, I'm considering getting the following PCI wifi adapter... D-Link Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter DWA-556 @ http://www.ebuyer.com/product/137542 .. would any wireless N PCI adapter work with my wireless N router (Netgear DGN2000) or do I need to look for a specific one?

P.S. What do you guys think about the PCI wireless N wifi Adapter I've chosen and would you guys recommend a different one?

Also I think my broadband package is the worse one ever and thinking of changing, which one do you guys recommend, my current package is an AOL one, 2mbps .. horrible crap LOL.

Re: Wireless Vs. Wired Internet For Gaming

Unless you need it to be PCIE save some money and get something a lot cheaper!

This is what I use http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edima...eless-PCI-card and it interfaces with either a Netgear or Dlink access point depending on signal strength (normally the netgear)

As to your Broadband yes you really need to change that see what the fastest speed you can actually get in your area is (not what somebody will sell you but what you can actually achieve!) and move up to that you will notice a much larger difference moving to faster broadband than any thing networking in your house may cause.

I am with Entanet (you would need to find a reseller, of which my Dad happens to be one ) but i believe O2 and Be there offer good packages which are probably worth a look.
