Different core temps.... RMA?
brought a q6600 a few weeks back and on an overclock the following temps are reported:
idle:
core1 - 44
core2 - 46
core3 - 35
core 4 - 36
OC= 3.6Ghz@1.4875v(in bios)
the chip has also been lapped, and sits under a thermalright ultra 120 extreme.
Temps measured using latest coretemp.
Can such a large variety in temps be a valid reason for an RMA? Will intel replace the cpu if they know its been lapped and OC'd?
if not, can anyone recommend any suggestions?
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
It's been overclocked out of the voltage limit set by intel - no warranty
It's been lapped - no warranty
Large deltas are quite common 65nm chips, it might be that your lap wasnt perfect, meaning its concave or convex or the cooler still it
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
I'm pretty sure if it's been lapped your warranty goes out the window. Generally you should test chips before lapping etc to make sure they work to start with. Presumably you've tried reseating the heatsink etc...that's normally the cause of this sort of issue.
Also I think you will find that intel merely guarantee that the chip will not exceed 65 (I think?) degrees at stock under the stock cooler...any variance below that doesn't matter as far as they're concerned as it still runs at the rated speed and below the temp limit.
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
Yeah lapping it will positively void the warranty. Idle temps are not going to mean a great deal so test the chip at 100% load using Prime and see what temps you get then.
If you get anywhere near 60-65 degrees you will be fine. The only other thing you can do is to reseat the processor and see if that evens your temps off.
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
lol you muppet.
You took sandpaper to your CPU and hope you have a warranty left afterwards. ;)
Are you using a screw down HSF or a push type?

Tip-Ex.
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
yeah the thermalright uses spring screws.
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
Although mine's only OC'd to 3Ghz...My cores seem to be running at different temps too:
Core1 = 35
Core2 = 34
Core3 = 27
Core4 = 28

can i ask what the VID of your cpu is? and also the vcore for that OC.
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
Does lapping actually work? I cant imagine there be much of a temperature difference from removing <0.5 mm from the top a cpu
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
it works if you do it right!! :P
i got around 5'C difference under no loading, and about 8'C difference under load. my core2duo never goes above 45'C now under full load
Re: Different core temps.... RMA?
mines just under 3ghz and temps as follows
22
22
15
17
you have nothing to worry about, 1 of the dual core is having more use than the other, so 2 cores always read higher
up have to remember its 2 core2duo's on 1 chip

GoNz0 do you live in the coldest house on earth?!?!

Your not wrong jeez thats cold.
So long as all the cores are within 10oC then its nothing to worry about, i have similar variation on my Q6600 and Q6700 CPU's, dont worry about it, also yes your warranty is definately voided.

Looking at GoNzO's system specs, he's/she's under water, so not so surprising :)

As per Hawker1986's post, it's common for 2 cores to report higher temps than the other 2. In saying that, you could reseat your heatsink/reapply thermal paste to see if that helps. Or you may have lapped your CPU unevenly :p :)

Indeed but even the best watercooling in the world you cant drop the temps below room temp, which is apparently 17oC or less. Average room temperatures are normally 20-25oC hence his room seems rather cold :)
