Doubt it, 8800GTX is, what, under 200W? If your bill doubled then that would mean that the rest of your house was only pulling about 200W all the time.
I wouldn't have thought it could double it, you sure it's not an estimated bill that they have done wrong or something.
yeh estimated bills are a bitch
my leccy company sent me a cheque earlier in year with a 40p refund from an estimated bill
40p cheque!!! did they really think i'd cash that ....
yeh but then they just add it to the next bill, don't know why they sent me the bloody cheque!!
Double what? The equivalent quarter from last year, or just the previous quarter? If the latter then quite normal - winter. If the former than check how much prices went up - it could be near double with the oil and gas prices being so high at wholesale recently.
So basically, this is probably quite normal* and will go down as both summer approaches and companies start lowering their prices in response to the cheaper wholesale market.
*The exception is if you can smell cannibis - in which case check your neighbour's houses for any factories and alert the police :p
If you weren't using the PC before for 15 hours a day, that in itself would greatly increase your bill:
PC, monitors (my 24" is a very good heater :-) ), lighting, heating, cups of coffee/tea etc.
I think the extra use of the PC , especially if late at night when you would normally have been in bed, would have far more effect that just the video card...that and the "winter" affect as stated
My familys bill has increased as Im using me new computer, and it folds whenever im on it, so the GPU is always working 100%, and even on same games, (Cossacks 2 where only the cpu is really needed)
Im looking to use it less, cant afford to waste money, defo not in this current economic climate
Well, we had our gas and elec bills today! Gas £385 Elec £190 I was and am gobsmacked!!!!
My HP ML110 Server costs about £175 per year in electricity running 24/7, so a GPU is not going to add a huge amount running 15 hrs a day to a quartely bill. IF it is drawing 200watts (which I doubt) then you could say that is 1 unit every 5 hours, and therefore 3 units a day. If a unit costs 12p than that is .12*3*90 = £33 on your quarterly bill.
You can easily check real electricity usage for devices with a simple monitor (£10 - £15) from CPC or Maplin.
To the OP - have you also considered any changes in the unit cost of the electricity? Our prices have just gone up a huge amount as we were previously on a frozen price cap that exprired.
ok thanks for the help guys, i got it wrong, the gas bill was 400, whilst the electricity was £200+ i am going to keep the 8800GTX, was contemplating to sell it. but i will be using it this summer for ym gaming sessions haha! :)
