    Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

I have a BFG 8800GT 512MB OC2 GPU, and am fairly happy with it on my 23’ monitor. (not happy with the excessive temps it rises to at times)

From reading reviews the ATI HD 4850 X2 2GB seems to get good reviews, but at £250, is the upgrade worth it?

I mostly play COD4, BF2142, and such games.

BTW, my motherboard does not support SLI, it is Crossfire ready.

    Crysis doesn’t interest me.

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

I doubt on games like COD4 you'd notice a massive increase.

It mainly depends though on what res your running it at and what the rest of the specs are for your pc.

    Resolution: 2048 x 1152

    Other Spec:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Cpu
    Asus P5Q Pro P45 Mobo
    4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 Ram
WD 320GB AAKS HDD - Primary (High Densisty Platter)
    Samsung 1TB F1 HDD
    Seagate 500GB HDD
Corsair VX450 CPU - am aware I would need to upgrade this for higher spec GPU.

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

an 8800GT is probably struggling at that resolution.
    maybe not a 4850X2 but what about maybe a 4850 or a 4870?
    or nVidia.. GTX260?

can i ask, where did you buy your monitor?

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

I bought the monitor from Dell when it was cheap (got it for around £189 with quidco cashback).

    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...hs1&sku=193757

    Its now back upto £250

If you are looking for a monitor its worth keeping an eye on www.hotukdeals.com

There have been alot there lately on offer.

Is the "X2" effectivel a 2nd card? Therefore would two ATI HD 4850 1GB in crossfire be the same?

no, it's 2 GPUs on the same PCB.. dunno how it compares to a 4850 Crossfire tbh, but i can imagine that the 4850 x-fire would work better.

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

Back to the OP, I went from an 8800GTS 320mb to a 4850 (not X2) for £120ish and I was very happy with the result. That's at 1920x1020.

It does struggle a bit with Cysis Warhead (i.e I have to drop the detail a little bit) but nothing else is much of a problem.

yeh always watch dell, because occasionally they do INSANE deals on their monitors. you may 'only' get a 5ms response but who cares, i've never noticed it

what frame rates do you get in COD4 with your 8800GT, offline and online?

That Dell monitor has a 2ms response rate...

I dont have a clue how I would check my frame rates.......never mind what they are.

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

google 'fraps' then run it while ur playing the game, in the top right or left corner it'll tell you your frame rates on the fly, or you can benchmark for 60 seconds and it'll give you the average/max/min etc.

useful tool when deciding whether you need a new graphics card, as if you have a min. frame rate above 30 then you probably don't need an upgrade!

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

On some games you can also turn on an FPS counter, depending on game you'll have to google and see, normally turned on by an in-game command line or an additional parameter to the short cut.

Re: Upgrading a 8800GT worth it?

Probably at that resolution a 1gb 4870 would be the best option, I dont think theres any need for an X2, esp in those games, it would save you a bit of cash too.

The HD4870 1gb is £184 at Novatech and OcUK. The 512mb version is around £150 to £160.

I would still get the 1Gb version, 512mb is a bit meagre for anything over 1920x1200, the higher the resolution the more use extra memory is for texturing.

If anything, I'd say the 4850 X2 would work better But I doubt there is much difference between the two.

    Same.
I reckon it's due to the fact it's done by the hardware and not software.
Plus you won't get any probs with Xfire compatability
