    965761 Minutes Remaining....

Built a new sys. Barton 2500, 512 RAM, 80GB HDD, Sony 48x24x48x16 combo CDRW DVD, Sapphire Radeon 9600, and I'm trying to back my MP3 collection onto the HDD from DVD+R disks.

Now, I know a DVD can hold a whole lot of MP3s, but I wasn't anticipating a write time of somewhere over 900000 minutes....yes, that's a nine followed by OH MY GOD HOW MANY MINUTES!!???

Anyways, the estimated time kept going up, until I get an 'Error Copying File or Folder' popup with 'Cannot copy file: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).'

I had the HDD and CD on the same IDE cable and thought that was the problem first time I tried it, but putting them on seperate cables didn't solve anything.

Anybody got a suggestion for me?

    Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like you might be overloading the write buffer with too many small files..

Have you got the space to create an image, then burn that instead of all the individual files?

I'm dumping all the files onto the new system HDD rather than backing them up onto new DVDs....

I have noticed that the majority of the files have written to the HDD before the error occurs...would you suggest that I try writing smaller amounts at a time? Is this buffer overrun a common occurence? Is there anyway of increasing the write buffer, or is it hardwired into the CD drive?

    Thanks for the help.

Ahh, got the wrong end of the stick lol..

It sounds like you might have a corrupt file, or possibly some dirt or a scratch on the disc?

Hope not, that's brand new backup, brand new disks, hopefully reputable (Packard Bell), there doesn't seem to be any marks on the disk and the original data is sound, so if it's a bad disc error, it's going to take me a long time to check the 10+ DVDs I've already written.

Anyone else know of a less labour intensive error reason?

Some of the the files are corrupted...
copy all of the files on the disk you want, when it gets to a bad one, skip it and try the next, which probably is also bad, untill you find one that copys ok, then carry on from there.
Packard Bell are the dvd disks you bought? if so why would you call them reputable.. They just buy disks as OEM in very large quantitys quite cheap, rebrand them, and sell them for a lot more.
theres an app called Minfo (search google for it..) which tells you what dye is used in the disk. There are several ones i would aviod, which I cant remember, but Ritek ones have never gave me problems.
When ever trying media you havent used before, tick the validate data box which checks the data on the disk is ok, or if its going to give crc errors (assuming yoy yu burned with nero)

Sorry about the reputable comment, had no idea that was a PB practise....

....B's Recorder gold 7 is what I'm using to burn, and I did tell it to validate the data, which it did. Probably should pick up a copy of Nero....

I hate backups....just when you get into the habit of doing it, you find out that it's pretty much pointless 'cause the media is so unreliable...I'll have a look for Ritek...Thanks...

Writing DVD's is a whole different kettle of fish to writing CD's.

Apart from the dvd-r's not being as durable as cd's, dvd writers are far more fussy when it comes to media, stick to branded dvd-r's such as ritek (datawrite etc). It looks like you have learnt the hard way my friend.

The dvd you have is definately bad but find out where the errored file (on the bad part of the dvd) is and copy the rest of the files off, unfortunately this will take time to do

No dagnamit, I refuse to learn the hard way. I'm going to copy all my data back onto crappy disks, over and over again, until my head explodes...

Oh well, only six or so hours wasted then. I've got all the original data to hand anyway, so I'll just get myself some decent disks and burn it all again.

Apart from Datawrite, can anyone else recommend the best disks (DVD+R, DVD-R?) and brand? No expense will be spared, so doesn't matter if they're more expensive, as long as they're the best.....I've got 12000+ digital pics I'd rather not loose.....

    Many, many thanks....

As the guys have stated before ritek media and its offspring are the way to go. I buy a lot of media from work and I always use the orange-topped riteks Overprinted as they seem more durable when used as coasters

Regarding the comment about the corrupt files due to a buffer issue, have you tried to create an ISO file of the folder of pictures and then burnt that back to the disc. I usually use this method for my desktop themes and utils such as object desktop and as yet I've had no issues.

Anyway - hope this information helps slightly

    Lee

** adorns red and white spotted cape, throws fist up into the air** Lexeus to the rescue

sorry I cant help, you are totally screwed !!!

ok, lol, back to the serious stuff. Cant help with the writing of dvd's apart from what has already been said, buy decent discs, I have had no preobs with bulpaq orange

But if you have a large mass of files with a few corrupt ones in with them, as in a backup gonr wrong, or just a large file transfer, then this program is what you want, Total copy:

    http://www.lefray.eclipse.co.uk/Total%20copy/tc11.exe

Basicly, unlike the windows copy, it will bring up an error on a file, and it will then let you continue with the copy, so that you can find all the courrpt files, and if in the case of a DVD, you may even find that on a second attempt the files will be readable, as it can be with touchy optical media.

Apart from that it has a speed control function which is useful if you want to maintain a useable level of performance for the rest of your apps whilst you are copying.

I hope this is useful to someone

oh, and one more thing you may like to try is just the simple microsoft backup tool, it makes it just one large file to corrupt rather than having lots of little ones to deal with
