the 7750 is based on the phenom core, so is a new architecture to the 5000. If i were you and on an AM2+ board, i would get a Phenom II.

Re: MD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7750+ Black Edition

The Phenom will be quicker clock for clock however the increase in performance will not be huge:

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpu...00-oc-review/4

A X2 7750+ overclocked to 3.1ghz is 10% to 15% faster than an X2 6000+ at the same clockspeed. The 7750+ will also have a higher power consumption too!!

    I would personally buy a Phenom II X3 710 or 720 instead.

The advantages of the the Phenom X3 over ther Athlon X2 are:
1.)It is based on the newer and faster Phenom II architechure unlike the 7750+ which is based on the Phenom.
2.)Made on a 45nm process meaning it runs cooler, consumes less power and overclocks much better
    3.)Has both DDR2 and DDR3 memory controllers
    4,)Has one extra processing core

Re: MD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7750+ Black Edition

Personally I'd be tempted to wait a few more months: AMD are pretty much bound to spread Phenom II goodness to the lower end of the market (the leaked roadmap has 2, 3 and 4 core Athlons based on the Phenom II architecture but without the L3 cache), and prices for the 3-core Phenom IIs might drop *a little* too, particularly if the pound strengths against the dollar at all! I also assume that a Phenom II X3 600-series will be launched with a lower L3 cache (like the X4 800-series). On the other hand, if you can stretch to £100 the X3-700 series are definite contenders.

Either way, I'd avoid the 7750 which I assume overclocks like all Phenom Is: i.e. badly!

Re: MD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7750+ Black Edition

Bugger i have to flash the BIOS bugger i really have had bad luck with that, bricked a mobo last year and said i would never flash again

Well I'm going for the black edition 720 CPU and I've ordered another ATI 4850 for a bit of crossfire action. Bloody hell i wanted to spend £60 on a new chip but managed £270 bugger.

    P.s don't tell the missus

You'll be especially impressed with the total lack of performance boost

I hope this isn't for gaming because you will really see no difference.

Re: MD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7750+ Black Edition

Can't see much point in that either tbh lol

    A 940 BE perhaps

I could see the point in a tri-core if your quad is sucking too much power and you aren't using the 4 cores to much effect though.

with the way things are threading, 3 cores @ 3.5+ > 4 cores @ 2.9 - 3. doubly so when all the fancy clock for clock increase is taken into account
