How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

Lo dudes.

With Solid State drives getting close to sensible prices, it's possibly nearly time to have your OS and major apps on one.
I personally use a Raptor for the OS, and then a larger drive, partitioned for Games on the other, faster partition and all my data and junk on the rest.

My OS, with all the apps attached, office, voice comms, paintshop, email, nero etc and all of the boot drive. Once it's all installed, with a swap file set to a minimum of 4gig, it rarely gets fragmented.

And it takes up under 20 gig. Always.

So for me, a 30 or 32 gig drive would be all I needed.
What about you?

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

Yeah, for me a 32Gb drive would be more than adequate, was pretty ticked I didn't get around to taking up the £70 offer on the Samsung SLC a while ago from Novatech.

The 32Gb would have more than 3/4 quarters empty with my complete install.

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

XP OS partition: 16.7 gigs
Apps installation partition (no user data): 20.1 gigs (I install a lot of shite - there are 285 folders here)

The OS partition can increase in size quite a lot if you install a lot of games, as quite a lot of installers - I know Crysis is an offender for this - copy a .msi installer file to the \WINDOWS\Installer folder. I've not got any games installed right now and this folder is just under a gig.

Another big offender is VMWare Workstaion which keeps drag-and-drop files stored in the %TEMP%\VMwareDnD folder. Of course you could always move the Documents and Settings folder to another partition.

In the two years I've had this Windows install, I think I've had to prune %TEMP% twice due to it getting a bit too big.

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

OS Drive is 398GB and I'm currently using 299GB. Haven't really bothered splitting it up into partitions. As all my data is on the server. The other partitions are for the multi boot setup I have.

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

I'm in the same boat as you Zak, Raptor as boot, data/storage on 500gb drive and then a 250gb temp drive.
The raptors got about 12gb of stuff on it...

My OS drive (which is vista + programs but not games or data) is about 60-70gig so I would need atleast 100Gb drive I think (my partition is 120GB)

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

C: drive is 72.7GB used on this laptop with 26.7GB sitting on my desktop that I really need to move at some point.

So Windows, my user folder, Office 2k7 and everything else I have installed on here gives me 46GB.

I guess I'll need a 64GB+ SSD on here.

Not sure about my desktop though, I guess it'll need 100GB+ due to having Photoshop and Lightroom amongst other things installed. I really don't want to mess about and have apps on a different drive to windows etc. My desktop also has 8GB ram, so has a lager page and hibernation files.

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

Less than 15GB. I might just have one of the early crappy SSDs (OCZ CORE Series) but my experience is that the boot up into windows is nice and fast but the stuttering and lagginess just completely destroys any incentive, even after trying all the various tweaks to optimise SSD performance. I'm considering ditching my SSD and getting a raptor instead. So my advice is if you do go for an SSD it's quite easy to fit OS installation and programs into less than 20 GB, but beware the cheaper crappier end because they are completely not worth any of the fuss.

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

Well my Vista is chomping a good old 15.6 GB just in the %WINDIR%
Programs amount to 34.3 GB

Win 7 is currently @ 11.5 GB in the %WINDIR%
Programs amounting to 15.1 GB

And the entirety of Mint amasses to 28.6 GB

7 and Mint on the 640 GB
Vista on the 500 GB
And deaded XP on the 500 GB but we don't talk about that one...

And my Vista install currently needs nuking and starting afresh with x64

Re: How much space does your OS/Boot drive take up?

I have dedicated drives at the moment for my operating systems due to having an abundance of hard drives.

At the moment:
Windows 7 x64 on a 500 gig drive about 450 gig remaining
Vista x86 on a 120GB drive about 40 gig remaining

The vista drive isnt hooked up at the moment as I've run out of HDD space in my case for it.
