Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
I've got a case with an LCD screen which has a 3 pin power connector that I've not seen before.
It seems I can't post images so heres a link to a pic of the connector, yoid.co.uk/images/3pin.JPG
The case instructions say LCD 3 pin to PSU 3 pin but I've not seen a PSU with a connector like this before, it has 1 Red and 2 Black wires.
Anyone seen one or know where I can get an adapter, if not, I was thinking of cutting the plug off the Floppy connector and connecting the 1 red and 2 black on the connector to the 1 red and 2 black of the floppy power cable.
Cheers

Reminds me of a Firewire connection with the outside shape.
Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
Certainly looks like a proprietary connector of some sort.
Google shows a few questions regarding similar connections, but without knowing what each of the wires does (voltage etc), you could kill it if you plug things in willy-nilly.

I read on one post that some guy had the same issue and removed the plug and wired it straight to his USB header, definitely not something i'd like to do.
Heres the link to his post, well almost if it'd let me post the link, computing.net/answers/hardware/pc-case-lcd-display-wiring/52411.html just add www
Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
If another user managed to power the LCD off USB, it suggests the LCD is 5v. You also describe the cable as red and black, the red also suggests a 5v connection, black goes to ground.
It's also safe to assume there are only two voltages used to power peripherals inside the PC case i.e 12v and 5v. Powering a 12v device using 5v fortunately won't kill it, it just wouldn't run as well or not at all.
Finally, all small LCDs I've gone through are powered by 5v, it's extremely uncommon for a small LCD screen to require a 12v input since the LED back light which sucks up the most power only requires around 3v.
With this in mind, it's a good bet the voltage you need is 5v. You could therefore power the LCD off a floppy connectors red and black cables, just make sure you isolate any loose cables. It's a good idea to cut apart those Molex-SATA power adaptors which come with motherboards and hook up the LCD to that, again matching up the colours.

Marvelous, Floppy it is, I'll give it a go cheers
Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
Just checking when removing the pins and it's not 2 black 1 red, it's 1 red 1 black 1 dark purple, so whats this gonna change, any ideas what the purple is.
Cheers
Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
Purple suggests it's 5v VSB but it could possibly be used for something else.
It would make sense however for a 5V VSB line to power the LCD, this means the LCD receives power and operates even when the machine is powered off but still plugged into the wall. - Only if it's hooked up with another purple wire from the PSU e.g. off the ATX 20/24 connector. or... if you hook it up to a USB/PS2 header powered off 5V VSB, e.g. when your optical mouse is still lit red even when you shut down.
If this is the case, you would still be able to hook up the red wire to the LCD but leave the purple wire out.
But, the colours may be non standard so there is a risk of damaging the LCD.
I'm out of ideas now, so... Good luck :D
EDIT: One more suggestion!
If you're like me, make mistakes all the time and bought the case off eBuyer;
Give it a try anyway, I once fried a VFD by sending 5V up the wrong wire, sent it back to eBuyer for a new one :D
Ok, that was a bit naughty, but to be fair the case (the VFD came with) and the VFD connections weren't labeled, just like yours! :)

So I take it this would need a purple if it has a clock, this is supposed to display time when off, so, I have an old USB header block which I could just poke the wires through and use the USB but which pins would I use if it's the normal setup.

Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
USB pinout
1 3 5 7 9
0 0 0 0 0
0 0 0 0 X
2 4 6 8 x
1 & 2 (in red) are 5V, 8 & 7 (UL) are GND
I suggest you use the RED only - leave the purple out for now, if 5V VSB supply is enabled on the USB port, the RED wire alone should suffice.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, only use one pin for 5V off the USB.

cpc to the rescue.

It's a great place to look for odd computer bits, esp anything requireing soldering/rewireing.
I sort of reminds me of what maplin once was.
You can probably find usb header connectors and the terminals in there some place.,
Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
Well, after many hours and fingers that are about as raw as they can get without bleeding, it's done. I stripped an old USB header block which I then lost so used the separate plastic headers from an old front audio connection, cut the cables at the pins then cut off the connectors and inserted the cables from the front LCD into the blocks and pushed the pins in the blocks to hold the cables in, a drop of super glue and were done.
Now if anyone would like to invent super glue that don't stick fingers or a stanley knife that don't cut fingers I'd be most grateful, or a cure for club finger syndrome would be nice.
Only problem I got is the CPU temp sensor doesn't seem to work, the HDD and system temps are fine just the CPU temp sensor reads 00c, oh well.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Cheers
Re: Anyone know what this connection is and where I'll get an adapter
Try a soldering Iron next time, wire cutters and paper clips.
It's very easy to remove the pin connectors from any motherboard header, use a paper clip or the tip of a craft knife (carefully) lift up the plastic lug and slide the pin connector out.
You can buy new pin connectors which you have to crimp onto the wires, but you can also just solder the wires onto the existing pin connectors then reinsert them back in.
PS Superglue and electrical connections/electronics don't always mix because of the fumes of the superglue which can coat, dry and harden over a connector causing bad connection.
However well done.
Lets have a pic of this juryrig mod :)
EDIT: The paper clip is my 2nd most commonly used tool after a screwdriver, it's got so many functions.

A Swiss army paper clip huh? do tell.
