recommend quiet hard drive for media center

Can anyone recommend a quiet harddrive for a media center, around the 500Gig mark.

A friend is asking me and I'm out of touch on drives at the moment.
Last I looked into 3 or 4 years ago Samsungs were the ones to go for, what's
    the situation now?

He's currently got a seagate 7200.6 which has got a really annoying seek noise.
    cheers!
Those geeks changed the dial up again.

Samsungs are quiet but, I think the WD green powers are pretty good too.

Another vote for WD Green Power... I use the 500GB in my media centre, and it's quiet but still quite fast.

I believe WD also make some targeted at AV applications which are also allegedly quiet. Check out their website

Got a few Samsungs kickin about here. They are virtually silent. My fans on low are louder (which is something I should really look).

Spinpoints knee in front of WD Greenpower drives.

4 of those WD Greenpower drives is more quiet than one Spinpoint drive I have.
Then 5 of those drives together is FAR less quiet than any of my Seagate drives.

    Try the green powers.

I've replaced all of the drives in my WHS with them

I had 2 WD's in RAID 0 before i ran my 2 Spinpoints in RAID 0 and the Samsungs are noticeably quieter

Re: recommend quiet hard drive for media center

Seeing as no one has recommended a Seagate yet I'll throw this one into the mix

    500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12

It has a single 500GB platter so it is slim, quiet, cool and quick according to most of the reviews on Newegg. Also see Hexus reader review

Samsung also do a 500GB single platter that runs at 5400rpm which should also be slim and quiet. Can't find the performance figures I was looking at atm. There was obviously some performance hit but the increased data density went some way to compensate.

    500GB Samsung SpinPoint EcoGreen F2

samsung has a tool you can use to make their drives run quieter at the cost of speed..
it's a toss up between that and the wd green drives

I'd recommend the Samsung if you want to get a quiet one.
