Cool Gaming Laptop With 3 Gpus
I have just got to know that Toshiba launches laptop with three GPUs:
Laptop With Three GPUs
The combined efforts of both companies resulted in Toshiba's most powerful gaming laptop to date featuring the new highly integrated GeForceĀ® 9400M graphics processing unit (GPU) along with a pair of NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS enthusiast-class GPUs.
That laptop must be very cool for gaming. But how can they deal with the heat?
Re: Cool Gaming Laptop With 3 Gpus
The 9400 will only be used in low power mode to save battery life(hybrid SLI i think its called?). when the system needs performance the 2x 9800GTS will kick into life, and disable the 9400
There are currently 17" laptops with 2x 8800m GTX, and 2x 9800m GTX, so it shouldnt get any hotter than one of those
Re: Cool Gaming Laptop With 3 Gpus
It's quite clever and it's not too overpriced either so that's pretty cool. If only they were sold here in the UK as my friend is looking for a gaming laptop.
Re: Cool Gaming Laptop With 3 Gpus
Personally I do not understand gaming laptops the is no way you can use them for gaming unless they are plugged in at which point you may as well save yourself a fortune and buy a desktop and geta better gaming experiance and if you need mobility then get a SFF desktop for gaming at LANs etc and if you need something to carry around with you for work etc get a netbook or a cheap laptop.
I can understand wanting a laptop which can do a bit of gaming but when the focus of the system is gaming the really is no comparison between a desktop and a laptop.

Thank GOD some else who thinks like me where laptops are concerned.
Re: Cool Gaming Laptop With 3 Gpus
You've got to admit though, seeing someone with one of those gaming laptops trying to use it as a standard portable notebook is pretty funny.

Same. I've got a desktop at home for gaming and for when i'm out and about i've got a netbook.
It's probaly cheaper and i get better performance plus my laptop is actually portable unlike these gaming laptops which weigh loads and need charging up every 10mins.
Re: Cool Gaming Laptop With 3 Gpus
+1 to Webby's rant!!! The only possible reason for having a gaming laptop is to appear "cool", and personally I think you'd look *much* cooler at LAN parties having a water-cooled mATX gaming cube ;)
If my budget could take it I'd be building myself one, I swear...

I think perhaps some manufacturer should build a docking station, where the GPUs are located on the dock with beefier GPU and better cooling (Or even extra battery built into the dock). The core unit would be very light (in comparison to the AIO) and have a low power PSU to go with it. The overall size with the dock might be bigger but doubt anyone will mind the extra size when they can bring the core unit around without all the extra weight when they don't want to game.

Now that would be cool. I've always wanted a portable pc. But I don't want a laptop. And I don't want both a laptop and desktop. Now if only I could build that... Haha maybe try one day later in life xD

Think of:
1. People who do not have a car but like to enjoy some LAN games with friends over the week-end. Lunging a 17" laptop may not be particularly enjoyable, but it still beats carrying an SFF desktop and a 17" monitor. It's also more socket friendly (less required).
2. Have to move often (applicable to students) and are not sure when they need to move. Desktop is a pain to move, again, especially if you do not have a car.
3. Have limited space. A netbook + an SFF still takes more space than a monstrosity of a laptop.
Way I see it, 'Gaming laptops' are nothing less than a desktop replacement laptop with the more powerful graphics card available at the time. Not everyone needs desktop replacement laptops, but there are people who are best off with those and amongst those, there are those who enjoys games.

You must be kidding :/
And for reference, I do favour gaming on a desktop when it's practical. I also prefer a full sized desktop over an SFF. Similarly, I would ideally like a full (5.1, 7.1, etc.) surround sound system. Yet due to my own space constraint, I am looking more seriously at getting a soundbar instead. It's not going to save me any money, it's got nothing to do with 'cool', it's just the most practical solution for me.

Going back to the original topic. The idea is not entirely new, the idea of having one graphics subsystem for performance and another for conserving battery is something that I've come across before. That said, it's the first time I've seen it mentioned on a SLi system.
