    ati 4870x2 problems

    just got this card and am having a few problems with it.

    PSU- Corsair HX620
    CPU- q6600@3.6ghz

    One of them is that whenever i restart, the desktop icons just go back to wherever they want to, and don't stay in the same position after a restart.

    Another is this error message i keep getting when i boot up the pc:

    Then when i go into device manager this comes up, and it won't go away even tho i preselect it to a folder where the drivers are, it says successfully installed but still comes up with a yellow exclamation mark.

    Also my 3dmark06 score is pretty poor:

    sm2=5649
    sm3=7029
    cpu=4939

    Re: ati 4870x2 problems

    Try an earlier/later version of the drivers?

    Ensure you have connected the required power cables to the card, I had some funky problems when I once forgot to connect the power cable to a 3850.

    Re: ati 4870x2 problems

    Google results say... that apparently the old problem introduced with 8.12 on some Intel chipsets with 4gb+ of RAM is still affecting some (it was cured in 9.1 for most single-GPU setups). By the looks of it 8.11 works fine, so try that until they've ironed out the rest of the bugs.

    It's very unlike ATI to have this sort of problem in recent years though - little glitches here and there, but I can't remember a show-stopper for years now. I wonder if they're trying something like unifying the Vista and W7 drivers and are struggling. :\

    Of course, it could just be that one of your chips is faulty too.

    Re: ati 4870x2 problems

    Thank you so much.
    Problem has now fully resolved.
    Getting 20,000 on 3dmark06 now

    Just hope that ATI sort their act out and produce drivers to fix the problem!

    Re: ati 4870x2 problems

    The ATI install seems to be a big pile of crap. As good practice I use to always uninstall the existing driver suite before installing the new one. Fine for the 4870, but caused all kinds of problems for the 4870x2 under Vista x64 since 8.9. I managed to upgrade from 8.9 to .10, .11 and then .12 blew the OS to pieces. After a Vista rebuild I couldn't get any version to install correctly. In the end I got the 8.12 hotfix working, and 9.1 caused regular crashes in WoW. So when it came to 9.2 I simply installed it over 8.12 and it's been great. No issue so far, no hassles but the big thing, noticeable FPS improvement in areas of WoW. There's a particular script (gauntlet in Utgarde Pinnacle) that use to cause any 8.x driver to drop under 10FPS at times, but with 9.2 it stays at 25+. Still not ideal but a notable improvement in my books, and arguably the best 4870x2 driver so far although still not perfect.

    Nice score, glad to hear you worked out your problem. Why do certain ATi and Nvidia cards always get driver issues

    Couldn't get the 9.2 to work for me.
    May try the 9.3 when they come out.
