10inches (Dream on ) has got to be better than 7 ????

Brought an eeepc 701 4G surf for her–in-doors last year, she loved it etc etc, now she’s started using my PC saying she hates doing long email etc on the 701 keyboard and the sideways screen scrolling was p*ssing her off.

So I said I’d buy her a laptop but she’s not convinced of the size as she likes to lean it on the arm of the sofa while surfing and watching TV.

So I thought 10" Notebook - start looking at the eeepc 1000, MSI Wind 10, the Medion and Advent version of the wind and still I can’t decide on what to go for. According to the eeepc and MSI the keyboard is 90% full size (17.5mm between keys)

Question – any body using/own one of the above? And if so please review for me.

I don't own any of the above, but I would advise that you wait a few months before committing to buying anything, as there should be new laptops based on AMD's Yukon and NVidia's ION platforms coming out soon. There's every chance they'll ship with ~ 12" screens and might just be perfect for your needs...

Re: 10inches (Dream on ) has got to be better than 7 ????

Also don't forget to check the resolutions of the screens (not sure what the 7" Eee has) more inches doesn't always mean more pixels, so that would not solve the constant horizontal scrolling issues.

As for keyboard size any of the 10"+ netbooks probably will be hugely better than the 7" Eee, the Samsung NC10 was praised for its keyboard if I remember correctly.

As Pob says though head down to PCWorld and have a play with all the options to find the one that suits the best then find a decent price online!

Re: 10inches (Dream on ) has got to be better than 7 ????

Listen and learn. My wife decided she needed a portable computer of some description. I was happy, because she seemed to be borrowing mine more and more (despite there being other PCs in the house).

So I got my wife a lovely little NC10. This was after much discussion and hands on test drives. All she wanted it for was Emails/Web/Photos. The NC10 was ideal.... for about 2 weeks.

Then she discovers Facebook. Then she and her friends start competing at all the little games. And really a 10" screen isn't big enough. And she loves my Revolution MX mouse. So she has the NC10 and I have her using my PC more than ever.

Re: 10inches (Dream on ) has got to be better than 7 ????

I "upgraded" from a 701 to a Acer Aspire one.. the 9" one, and the resolution bump does mean no more side-scrolling....

As above, if you want to make an investement, wait until the new chipsets are out... however Dell have an offer on for their 9" netbook for £150 at the moment, if you head over to the bargains section on this site youll see it...

I bought my Aspire for 150 and love it!

Re: 10inches (Dream on ) has got to be better than 7 ????

Cheers for the comments chaps, I've opted for the N10 and I'll take out the 2GB RAM stick I stuck in the Eeepc and boost the Samsung. That should keep the GF happy and off my PC for a while. I would have waited a while but I've a buyer for the Eeepc so that will save me some haste and money.

I was really impressed with the reviews I found of the N10, I like fact they only do one spec, so just pick the colour and off you go. None of this flipping between specs trying to find the right combo then discovering the UK version is slightly different.

    10.2in, 1,024 x 600, LED screen (Eeepc 800x480), 160GB HDD (Eeepc 4GB) and a six-cell battery with a 5,200mAh capacity (Eeepc 4 Cell 4,400)! should be an improvement.

Another thumbs up from me on the NC10 have one myself and I am finding myself using as the main machine in the house these days as the thing is so good to use all day. I code, play games, browse etc etc and it's been solid since I got it almost 4 months ago. I did however dump the standard 1GB memory and stick a 2gb stick in.

Don't forget that although the battery is bigger, the larger screen and HDD (as oppose to small SSD) will draw more power, so I doubt you'll find the battery life improves much, if at all (note that it only has an 18% increase in capacity, despite the 50% increase in number of cells)! On the other hand it should do everything that's required of it - hope you get your PC back more often

LOL I would suggest you go get a Samsung NC10 and test it. I have had the eeepc's and the 3 hour battery is a joke, this Sammy NC10 with the 6 cell battery I get almost 7 hours out of it hammering it watching movies and games on it. So the battery does indeed make a massive improvement.

I also have 2gb memory stick in there instead of the 1gb stick and I dumped the 160gbHD and dropped a spare 320GB HD in there so I am using more power from the battery than it would standard and I am still getting 7 hours out of it.

If I had the money for one I'd seriously consider it. But I don't.

Ya, I dug out that eeepc spec from the Asus web site, but I though my battery was 3 cell, and your right - it lasts just over 2 hour mark.

The N10 review I looked at was from Trusted Reviews which stated "Running a standard definition video, with screen brightness and volume at 50 per cent, the NC10 continued running for a superb five hours and 40 minutes" so a slight improvement coming I feel.

Re: 10inches (Dream on ) has got to be better than 7 ????

I was half expecting my battery to take a right hammering from adding double the memory and doubling the hard drive capacity and I use it for several hours a night when I am in the house, game on the main pc and use this for everything else and it's never ran out on me once. I just charge it overnight

We've had nearly all the netbooks come through the office at some point for staff and ourselves but from the bunch the Samsung is the only one that did everything I needed. If however HP had released the 1.6ghz version of their mini-note in the UK instead of the 1.2ghz via chip we got I would of had that as its got by far the best screen res of something like 1280x768 and its easily the best screen for the netbooks atm, brushed aluminium case and keyboard but the price is miles out of the range for the netbook market.

I've got the Advent equivalent of the MSI Wind and think it's great! The keyboard especially was very important to me as I use it to type up my books. I've certainly no complaints with it at all. The screen is 10" which is probably as small as I would go. It's plenty big enough for the net and emails. It's a robust and durable netbook as well with no flex in the casing even when lifting it with one hand which you can easily do.
