Building your own PC: Noobs Guide Idea?
Just had a thought about this. Is anyone interesting in assembling a complete and fully comprehensive guide to assembling your own PC. This would cover ALL areas from component selection - what use the PC will have, what is important (performance / noise / efficiency), how to work to a budget, what points to consider in every component you buy.
For example:
Processor:
* Stock performance
* Overclockability (new word :D)
* Price
* Power consumption (and hence noise implication)
* Efficiency (performance/Watt)
Case:
* Looks
* Size
* Weight
* Accessibility (screw-less fittings etc)
* Internal room
* Supplied fans
* Room for additional fans
* Modability (new word :D)
* Supplied adapter plates
* Build quality
* Front input panel options
You get the idea. When we've covered all these areas and supplied 2 or 3 recommended products we can then do an illustrated guide of EVERY step of assembling the PC. I'm talking about how to apply thermal paste, how to mount the CPU cooler to the motherboard. Best practice methods to show the easiest and most stress free way of doing everything. This could be a community project with people supplying parts for the guide, based on different hard configurations. For example, same section with two examples, one for AMD and the other for Intel setups.
If there's interest in contributing towards this project I'll draw up a list of all the sections that need to be covered.
Re: Building your own PC: Noobs Guide Idea?
I think that this could be a good idea, and would defo help first time builders;
So...
GPU:
*Power consumption and leads (PCI-e 6 pin, 8 pin, bus powered...)
*AGP/PCI-eX16
*Outputs (DVI, Display Port, VGA, HDMI...)
*Size, half or full height for media centers - will it fit lenghtways in your case
*Memory - 512mb == <22", 856-1gb == >22"
*Core/shader/memory speeds
*Output audio over HDMI
*Company (EGVA, Sapphire..., AND ATI/NVIDIA)
*Cores
*Cooler - temps and noise
...erm I think that would do

I'm up for helping, could do a water block install guide?
Re: Building your own PC: Noobs Guide Idea?
we'll need Zak's help too then..
Zak's partition theory
and
Zak's BIOS killing theory :D
but on a serious note; i'm up for helping :)
Re: Building your own PC: Noobs Guide Idea?
Well if everyone makes suggestions, then we can go about formalising the structure and scope of the guide. This thread is just for it's decussion I'll create a fully clean thread with every post a seperate section for easy hot linking to those sections so they can be referenced in other threads.

Yeah il help out too, will need constant editting to stay with the times though.

Back on topic; this is a really sound idea :) Once the Lian Li case comes back into stock I can take some pictures of transposing my hardware from the old to the new, if that is of any help.
