    Chainging Chips around

I'm just abou to start overclocking my Q6600 be unfourtunatly it's a B3 version so i won't be able to go as high as a G0 one.
But then yesterday i remembered that my gf pc has a Q6600 in it. Fired up CPU-Z and it was a G0 one.
Now i don't see no reason why i can't swap the two chips round and the one that had the G0 in it run fine with the B3. The only reason i ask is it isn't a pre built one but an off the shelf philps one from PC world
I don't see why not as if anything the G0 is newer so it should work with older chips but i just thought i'd better check.

Nah, the steppings should be cross compatible. I assume you do have your girlfriend's permission to nick her superior CPU.

The B3 has a higher operating temperature and needs more power to run too. I would make sure that the PSU is powerful enough on your girlfriend's PC and whether the cooler is sufficient.

I would add that before doing the swap get some good quality thermal paste if you haven't already.

Just been on the aria.co.uk website where I buy most of my memory for system builds. Have a look here - http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=25701

I'm plaaning to check the temp once it gets in but when i stress tested the current Q6600 in her pc it didn't get above 50C.
As for the PSU it only takes an extra 10W at max so i'm not to worried.

Also be aware that a lot of the g0 that didn't overclock so well for whatever reason got shipped out to OEM builds so even though it's fine at stock it may not overclock so well.

didn't know that. Thanks for telling me.
What do you reckon the chances are it will overclock to 3.2Ghz (My aim)
Plus surely at worst it will be the same as a B3 yet it will produce less heat.

Agreed! My Q6600 G0 needs more voltage to overclock than the older ones.

    Re: Chainging Chips around

Just been looking at the Q6600 more closely and i've noticed that the VID keeps changing in coretemp.
I thought that, that was hard programmed into the chip and didn't change whatever?

Use Core Temp to read the VID.
