What do you use yours for?!

Fairly new to the forum, and i post here because i know the people who view these forums are more upto date and more likely to have the best components!

I am curious to know, what reason do you have for pouring so much money into your computers? and just wondering how could i upgrade mine further haha! when i move into my new room, i will probably hook it up to a HD TV so its nicer to watch things on a big screen. you think the gfx card will display it at good quality?

My regular use setup i have:

OS: Windows Vista 32-bit // Case: Antec P182 (insulated with some foamy stuff, turned off one of the fans) // CPU: Athlon X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ @ 3.01 (Arctic Freezer 7 on low for silence) // GPU: GeForce 8600 GTS (Accelero Passive for silence!) // PSU: 520 Watts // HDD: Samsung SpinPoint 500 GB // RAM: 4GB // MoBo: Asus M2N-E // Speakers: Bose Companion 5 speakers // Monitor: E248WFP // mouse and keyboard the dell multimedia range.


i think there is nothing more i can do to make it better, i have another computer for gaming, but i really don't game much. just watch tv shows!

also would be interested to know how much you all spent!!

my total for the above is: about £750 ish (come to think of it, thats quite a lot for me!!)

Well my Specs are left in the system thing and also in my sig. I use my PCs for pretty much everything, listening to music, watching films, lots of gaming, graphic work and simple word processing etc for Uni. As to how much they cost, who knows Im always updating them and tweaking here and there so I dont have a clue tbh. (obviously I use my media centre just for media on my LCD).

Well personally the reason I upgrade my PC is ostensibly to keep up with new games as they are released, but if I'm honest it's also largely just because I love building and rebuilding PCs. If it was purely about performance I would never be able to justify the expense - it's the enjoyment I get from tinkering with the insides of my PC that makes it worthwhile! And as far as my total spend is concerned I'm in a similar situarion to Hawker - changed so many bits and pieces I've lost track... Maybe £750?

As for your media PC, I can't really see any reason to upgrade it - I would think that anything you add will only add heat and hence increase noise, which I'm guessing would be a bad thing for you! Mind you I have no experience of the media capabilities of the 8600GTS - anyone out there got any thoughts?

yeah, i dont really have time for gaming nowadays. but i will probably do some more tinkering with my other computer this summer, i have a 8800gtx lying around and i am going to pickup a new heatsink this weekend.
anyone know if the True Extreme 120 will fit on to the Ass p5n? the thing is do huge im worried!

I tend to build budget busting gaming PC's and then write up an article on parts I've used and the results and post on another forum. Why do I do it.... to save people money (not myself though lol) and it's a hobby really, keeps me out of trouble......

8600GTS is more than good enough for media stuff, its always fun to tinker though . I dont see any reason a TRUE would not fit on the motherboard, so long as the case is big enough. If its the Antec P182 I can confirm it will fit fine, ive got one in my P182, no problems.

I tend to use the computer mostly for web browsing,word processing,image editing, gaming and watching videos. I tend to like playing some of the newer games so I need to update my graphics card every year or two to something a bit better. However TBH I hardly have had the time to game much in the last 6 months or so!

Gaming mainly. The rest is just general use. I do the odd DVD Authoring here and there, and thats where the Quad Core comes in handy. I do also run VM just to test stuff out.

yeah i had a GTX plugged in, but was thinking that its not energy efficient to keep it in there, and i just found out that my processor sucks up so much power (125V i think)
i want to use my intel machine lol!

This is pretty much, verbatim, what I was going to have written. I like to tinker to learn, and play games. Oh and video transcoding, because my dad seems to think that type of file is instantly playable on every computer without repurcussions
