Phenom 720 Boxed cooler.

Well, this is the standard boxed cooler. Not very impressive if I may say so!

Nope, not exactly brilliant, but almost 100% guaranteed to fit most chassis configs.

The one thing that annoys me is that most of the CPUs sold by vendors I use are all retail boxed.

I almost always want to use a cooler of my choice, and as such I dont need the stock cooler sitting around getting in the way.

I wonder if enough people do the "I dont want Windows, gimme a refund Microsoft" thing with the stock coolers, Intel and AMD will get the idea and stop supplying them?

What did you expect, exactly? Looks to me like it'll do the job in a reasonably ventilated case at stock clocks, keeping the CPU to about 50C max, which is about all you can expect for a cooler you don't *really* pay for!

I quite like the smaller heatblock with fins extending all the way down the cooler at the sides - that should allow greater airflow than the older AM2 coolers which had a completely solid base...

It's a basic stock heat sink which should be fine for an unclocked cpu.
Small and compact enough to not cause any case issues and simple enough to be very low cost.

Next you have to remember the market, us specialist users who consider aftermarket coolers are a very small part of it.
The majority will go to OEM system builders who by in bulk and they probably do sell them OEM units.
Next are people who know very little, looking to upgrade who'll want everything included.
Finally at the bottom of the pile there's us who demand more out of our pc's and are willing to pay extra for a non-stock cooler.

720 is a die shrink and isnt exactly a power hog..

the one that came with my 9850 has heatpipes and gubbins, pretty chunky for a stock cooler

I agree, That it is designed to fit most chassis and is 'good enough' but, I was expecting it to be the same as the quad core one with heatpipes.

Anyway, I've had to use it for now as my old Artic cooling freezer 64 won't fit, The latch fouls the Northbridge heatsink.

It is noisy though and without load it can get quite hot.

Since (well, you've seen my thread) I'm also interested in the 720, and I won't be changing the heatsink right away (would void my warranty otherwise - don't ask).

I've managed to unlock my 4th core and run @3.2Ghz with a minor (0.05 v) increase for a 46 deg C idle and 57 deg C max on the stock cooler, but then the 4th core is a power hog - disabling it drops idle temps by circa 7 degrees.

Equally, the rest of the case is full of junk to

Under a decent cooler you'll be able to get those temps down quite a bit I'd imagine.

I'm using the Xigmatek X1283 and the Q6600 I've got it running at 3.1ghz with all the fans on minimum

bit off topic, i have AM2 6000+ with Ultra extreme 120, with a "silent fan" running at 1000 (=100&#37 and its still about at approx 43^c average.. i was expecting a lot lower with the new heatsink

I put it on thermal cruise in the bios which made the CPU run hotter but, when I rebooted the CPU fan ran at 6000+ RPM.......now that was enough to wake the neighbours.
