Bought the wrong PSU....... Apparently !!!

Hi all,

I am in the process of building myself a new pc. I have bought some of the components already and waiting for the good old postman to bring the others.

When I last posted a thread on here with my spec so far. I got like a billion people telling me stay clear of my PSU.

I bought a Q-tec 400WP Dual Fan Gold PSU.

Q-Tec seems to be a bad word on these forums!!

I didn't realise. I should have asked you guys before I bought it.

Is my PSU really that bad? If so, what do you recommend?

qtec's 550 model mostly sucks (bad voltages, explosions), but they're highly variable & some are fine. the 400w model is about 250w in REAL terms (qtec quote peak values), you'd be better off with the psu in a £11 ebuyer case.

tagan's 480w psu is good if you're feeling flush (£60), a 3x0 Watt psu from hiper, antec or enermax should do the job for about £35

Get the CWT 450watt from Scan for £35 bargin. I got my Levicom 450watt from aria.co.uk for £45 and im well plesaed with it.

Others: Antec, Thermal take, enermax

a 450W CWT at scan for £35 will be more than plenty for any normal pc. The 550w is technicly better though, and a lot more powerfull , which is why it costs about double.
With a 550W psu you would be able to run 80-150W TEC's from them but seperate psu's are better If you intend to do that.

Yeh i run my current system on a 450w CWT and its stable as and well pleased for a £35 psu .

yes the CWT is defo the best buy atm price/quality. It will deal easily with latest bartons, 9800;s etc and leave headroom for whacking the voltages up (if ur into that stuff )

Erm....while were on the subject of PSU's, would a "480W Thermaltake Black Butterfly Special Edition Silent PSU W0019 Exclusive" be fine for running a P4 2.4ghz HT @ 2.5ghz, 1024 ram, p4p800, Gainwood GF FX 5900, 5 case fans, 3 ide hdds and a sata hdd, plus a dvd-writer, among other things?

I will be running a P4 3.2Ghz, P4C800 Mobo, Audigy 2, and powerful grafx crd that I am yet to buy. Prob, wait till new ones come out next month.

Yeah, a good 400watt will be fine 450watt would just be a bit of future proofing for more case fans/hard drives etc

qtec dont have a TRUE 550w psu or a 400 for that matter. Go for an Atec/enermax/CWT it will be worth it.
