Pocket PC, GPS sat nav and axims from US??

Hi peeps. Have been running my old P2 266 laptop with an etrex gps plugged in for a while, software wise im using memory map navigator with 1:50,000 digital OS maps and auto route 2003. Anyway my dad has shown some interest in getting a map based GPS system for his land rover. Luckilly memory map nav supports pocket pc's so he can use that for off roading, nav wise am looking at tom tom 2 witch has voice directions.
So has anybody used pocket computers with gps for sat nav? Hardware wise am looking at possibly a Dell axim X3, they are $200 dolars and my sister goes out there a lot so could bring one back, any problems with that idea, or any other cheap pocket computers??
