HDD Failure or MBR Corruption or Something Else

i have an issue with a hdd that is around 6-7 months old. it's a sammy f1 320 drive.

it started earlier, i was installing a new bluetooth adaptor. all went well until i had to restart. it shutdown as usual, but upon restart it got to the windows splash screen but then nothing - which seems to born out as my usb k/b and mouse have nothing.

there was no warning or indication, no sounds to indicate the drive is/was about to fail but i don't thinks so because i can see/view it from my other drive and run programs from it.

the only other thing i can think of is the mbr, what say anybody? and is there anything else it could be?

this has really made my day

Press F8 just after the BIOS screen. Choose "last known good configuration".

If the HDD is dying, check the SMART values after hooking it up to another PC with SpeedFan.

well accoring to the smart figures on speed fan the drive perfectly healthy, but won't start in safe mode or anything.

i can see the disc contents from my other drive, but can't boot from it - and don't really want to lose anything on it (well mainly emails). so the only other thing that i can think of is a dodgy mbr. but i can't think of what would cause that. now easily fixed, but for some reason - and i think it's to do with slipstreamed discs that i have no recovery option if i boot from my xp disc. does anyone know a workaround to this?

stick the system disk in and let it load, then hit r for recovery console and type

    chkdsk c: /r

    (assuming its c)
