My friend has just given me his old computer he got from insurence becuase hes built his own media center, it has a HEC 300Watt PSU in it, would i want to upgrade it to 450 seeing as im going to install a 9600GT into it!

Or if possible does anyone else know a better card than the 9600GT around the 50/65 pound mark

The 9600GT is as fast as you are going to get in that price range brand new although the ones I have seen cost over £70!

What is the spec of the system??

I would go for the following PSU if it is a Core2 or Athlon X2 based system:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/400w-...2V-6Serial-ATA

    Silverpower is part of Tagan.

    Edit!

    Here is a review:

    http://techreport.com/articles.x/16073/11

It has between 80% to 90% efficiency which is a good thing!!

I have the Corsair HX520W too and it is an excellent PSU. However it is has risen a lot in price in the past year and now is around £80!!

If you need a bit more power one of the OCZ Stealth Xtream 500W is good value for £46:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135159

There is also the OCZ 500W Mod XStream Pro PSU with modular cables for £60:

Power supplies - most by Corsair, Seasonic, FSP, Tagan have a good reputation. For 400W I'd be looking at FSP, but I also have a Cosair HX520 which seems to be OK.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

    £80 is hardly budget though

    It's 4.98*

    Re: Recommended PSU

I can also agree with CAT this
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/400w-...2V-6Serial-ATA
He recommneded it to me on a earlier spec.

Psu is excellent on first impressions, I purchased one to go with a new build it arrived saturday. For a cheaper unit, the packaging and feel/weight of the psu was that it was one of high quality.

It had all the cables you could need, its quiet under operation and even comes with a cable to control fan speed if you have a spare socket on your motherboard. Of course I haven't had it long enough to talk of long term stability but on first impressions, this seems like a great unit for a great price

No (although he didn't specify budget) - sadly the falling pound has made imports more expensive.

Budget PSUs are budget for a reason - something has been compromised (although you could argue that you pay a premium for a well known branded prduct - but then a branded product with a good reputation will want to maintain that reputation!)

A lot of the time you actually do pay a premium for the name. There are many cases where basically the same PSU(made by the same OEM) is sold under a less well known brand for a much lower price even now with the weaker pound.

I don't know if this is still the case but when I was looking for my PSU (Seasonic S12 500w) Seasonic were making the Corsair PSUs.

As such I wouldn't hesitate to order a Corsair, but I would suggest something like an FSP would probably fit within budget nicely.

    Re: Recommended PSU

The HX520W is made by Seasonic. I believe that Corsair use Seasonic and CWT to make their PSUs.
