CPU cooler and Noise

My system runs noisier than I think it should.


It has an unbranded PSU and stock Intel Cooler. (Quad core)


How do I check if its the PSU that's loud or the cooler?

I've tried putting my ear against them but can't tell.

Is there any way of switching either of them off and confirming?

You can stick something in the way of the intel fan to stop it (use a pen), then see if the sounds goes.

Alternatively, pull the fan plug out but that is more delicate.

1) change the psu to a decent branded one (eg corsair). Even if your current one isnt noisy, I personally wouldnt trust it unless you can verify the manufacturer to be a decent one.
2) as suggested above, just stop the fan from moving by sticking something in the way, and then turning the pc on.

Try rolling a magazine up into a tube, put it to your ear, and direct it a the parts (ie psu, cpu cooler) to see which is making the most noise.

You can safely stop fans for short periods.

Watch that, pay attention and follow.
You don't even have to read anything.

And track down some information on that PSU or replace it with something decent (and decent doesn't mean a higher wattage cheap job)

Remember that most BIOSs wil sound an alarm if the CPU fan stalls or runs slowly - don't be surprised by it. And don't stall it for too long - it is surprising how quickly the temperature rises when the forced air cooling is stopped - the heatsinks are not designed for passive convenction cooling.
