Intel have just released new firmware on their SSD's, which has doubled the write speeds on his SSD (Intel X25-M). Intel have the best, but cost more. Either get Intel or Vertex, they don't have that crap Jmicron controller problem.

Intel is still by far the best, but the OCZ Vertex are actually pretty good, and much better than all their budget competition.

It doesn't double the speed, it simple helps to stop the drive becoming fragmented and even when the drive does become fragmented, it will attempt to keep the write speeds as close to 80 MB/Sec as possible.

To answer the OP's original question, the fastest SATA II based drive currently is the Intel X25-E/Kingston SSDNow E-Series, but they come at a price and you'd need at least two of the 32GB drives to be useful for a desktop PC with Vista plus other stuff (such as games, office etc). IOPS are truly massive and currently, no other drives come close.

When buying an SSD though, just look at what exactly you want to do with the system - even a lower spec drive will give a noticeable increase in speed over most conventional drives. If it's just for gaming, the occasion vid encoding, photoshop, office use etc, then you would be fine with most of the cheaper, non-Jmicron drives or one of the Intel M series drives.

OCZ Vertex 120GB is the best bang for buck right now IMO.
