E5200 runs hotter than E5300? Core Voltage for E5X00?
Well I have a E5200 with a VID of 1.1875V and a E5300 with a VID of 1.2625V.
Obviously the E5200 overclocks more stably than my E5300 but for some reason my E5200 has idle temperatures of 43 degrees roughly whilst my E5300 idles at 33 degrees Celsius in the same computer. This is with a Vcore voltage of 1.3V across both of them... I have used the same cooler, applied the same amount of thermal paste each time etc... I really wanna use my E5200 but the temperatures are too high for me...
Is there a possibility that the temperature sensors are like 10 degrees Celsius hotter than they should be or what? :/ It's a shame to use my E5300 when my E5200 overclocks better due to a lower VID...
Also, what is the largely accepted safe Core voltage for these 45nm processors. I've heard people saying 1.4V should be the maximum but then I've also heard others saying up to 1.5V is fine but then there was also a case where Anandtech or somewhere managed to fry their CPU due to running it over 1.4V (well that was because it ran 24/7...) Also, what's the best way to read your voltage. I use CPU-Z but it's always higher than what I set it in the BIOS but people have told me that it's normal.

The E5300 is a R0 stepping processor as are the newer E5200 processors. The older the E5200 processors were M0. Basically the R0 stepping introduced better power management features from what I have read.
It was the same IIRC with my E4300 which was an L2 stepping and overclocked better than my E4500 which was a M0 stepping and ran cooler.

I've got an E5200 M0 stepping, running at 3.68 @ 1.4v. It's a 24/7 machine and has been running for a few weeks now. I can manage 4ghz @ 1.5v, but the speed benefits were marginal for such a high voltage.
I've no idea what my idle temps are due stuck sensors (which stay at 35c for the CPU and 44c for each core if the temps are lower than that). The load temps are 45/53/49 (CPU/Core1/Core2) using a xigmatech cooler.

Hmm then would it be better to stay with 3.6Ghz with my E5300 with idle temps of 31 degrees celsius at 1.4v or 3.75ghz with my E5200 with idle temps of 45 degrees celsius at 1.4v?
Because in the end I'm going to sell the other processor and with my E5300 I can fetch quite a bit more than my E5200...

It's too expensive though and I don't really need something over 4ghz and 2mb cache is enough for me.

Just check whether your motherboard has issues with newer processors like the E5300. It could be that a BIOS update is needed for the proper temperature to be shown??
However if this is not the case I would go with the E5300 as the lower idle temperatures are far better.Also check your overclock using 25 iterations of IntelBurnTest as it will make your processors run very hot and hence you can check both stability and the maximum temperature each processor will reach.
Anything over 70c is not so good!
