    New Motherboard Needed

OK, so I need a new motherboard to house the below components:

    CPU: Intel E2180 Dual Core, 2GHz, 800MHz bus, LGA775 w/ Arctic Cool Freezer7Pro
    RAM: Corsair TwinX 2x1GB DDR2 PC6400
    GPU: 512MB Sapphire HD4670 PCI-E x16
    HDD: 2x80GB SATA2 and 1x250GB SATA2

Also needs 1 IDE port for a couple of optical devices.

I have an old PSU, but it's still a pretty good one. Very stable and has powered things fine for a long time. It's a CWT 450W (one of those that Antec used to rebrand as their own IIRC) and has the usual cables.

I would prefer the cheaper the better, but I know I should really get a half decent one. Am gonna try and keep it under £50, but will see.

    Any ideas please?

    Re: New Motherboard Needed

Will you be overclocking? And will you need 2 or 4 RAM slots? mATX or ATX?

If you're overclocking, you can get p35 motherboards on eBay but they'll be secondhand.

I've heard the Gigabyte G31M isn't bad either. G31 motherboards can be easily gotten for below £50 but they only have 2 RAM slots and have little overclocking options. They're almost all mATX whereas P35 have quite a lot of overclocking options and 4 RAM slots but they'll be ATX most likely. Hard to get a brand new P35 motherboard for under £50 though.

    Re: New Motherboard Needed

Well, I currently have 2x1GB RAM modules, am tempted to get an additional 2x1GB so 4 slots would be nice. Not worried about the size of the board, and I generally don't bother with overclocking that much anymore (although I've had my CPU up to 2.2GHz from 2GHz without any effort or noticeable extra heat with my Arctic Cooler).

Had a look at the link above to the P31/P35 boards and the Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L looks like it fits my needs, just a tad over £55.

    Re: New Motherboard Needed

Thanks for the offer, but I tend to stay away from 2nd hand components. I prefer to pay a little extra and get comfort in the knowledge that if it doesn't work, I'm protected by a warranty.

Have a look here - Clicky!, for a look at the Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L iP31 Socket 775 in action and a link to an up-to-date price from ebuyer. The motherboard was a CustomPC recommended budget over-clocking board for nearly a year and has been used in many builds. The article in the above link is a full build and test using the E2160, so similar to your requirements. I think you should find it interesting.

Just beware that apparently that motherboard doesn't let you populate all 4 RAM slots with DDR2 memory :/

The chipset prefers 2 dimms being filled not 4 so if you want more RAM you will have to buy it as two 2gb DIMMs!!

This is true and is for most P31 and it's G brother MB, but allen has asked for a cheap but good replacement MB and he wont go far wrong with it. I dont think he said he was buying more RAM.

I know it is a good motherboard for the price as I have recommended it before BTW!! I was just pointing to the OP about its preferance for 2 dimms which maybe not so obvious. as the OP said he/she would want to upgrade their RAM. TBH 4gb of RAM is about £30 to £35 anyway so its should not be a major limitation.

    Re: New Motherboard Needed

Yeah, having read a bit more, I'm thinking that the Gigabyte above could be a good option for me. With regards to the RAM, after thinking about it, I haven't yet had a point where my memory usage has gone much above 1.5GB, so probably not really needed...

As CAT says though, 2x2GB isn't too expensive, and will be more future proof than my current 2x1GB which could easily go in a media PC.

I would agree with Hyperviper but get a G31 because you have integrated graphics for when things "if" they go wrong. Otherwise just disable it and use it as per usual.

    Re: New Motherboard Needed

Looks like I'm gonna have to order this quite soon, my PC has completely died now. The fans come on, but it refuses to post, so it could only be a few things...

I've checked most things, but I'm assuming it's the motherboard due to the fact that I can take everything off the motherboard, power it up and it doesn't complain one bit, no beeping or anything. I'm certain that most BIOS manufacturers include the facility for the system to beep if it detects errors (like no memory or CPU for example), but nothing. I've made sure that the case speaker is plugged in correctly, and still nothing.

The only other thing it could be is the PSU? It's a CWT 450W, I've had it for a long, long time... It's one of those that Antec used to rebrand as their own IIRC. Still, I can't help but think it's maybe attributing to the fault here. I don't have another PSU I can't test though.

So, I have some recomendations above for the motherboard, but what about a decent PSU these days? Again, I would have to set a budget of about £50-60, and if possible, I would like one that is modular (can't stand all those extra cables sitting above my DVD drives in the case). Probably not a lot of options for that price range though, after having a quick look on scan!

This will do the job nicely:
