So my drive has filled up and I'm seeking a new system drive to split it up.
Anybody tell me why I shouldn't just go and buy a velociraptor?

Those geeks changed the dial up again.
They are quite expensive and reasonably loud for not that much of a performance boost, but it is still a performance boost nonetheless. Are you sure you don't want to get a SSD for the system drive like the OCZ Vertex for a little bit more money?
Give me the money, that'll stop you, failing that just buy a Vertex.
Either go for all-out performance and get an SSD, or get a normal HDD and a new graphics card - that should stop that money burning a hole in your pocket
Probably worth buying a couple of the (relatively) cheap Samsung SSDs that Novatech keep putting on special offer and RAID-0 them instead.
Should be a lot more of a WOW factor then a raptor.

You could always buy my 75GB Raptor for a third of the price and get 99% of the same performance.
OCZ Vertex
"Offering your notebook or desktop system the incredible benefits of flash-based storage, the OCZ Apex Series is the result of all the latest breakthroughs in SSD technology, including new internal RAID 0 architecture, updated controller design, and speedy 230MB/sec read and 160MB/sec write speeds."
OMG!!!!!!
When these babies drop in price I will be all over them.
Might be checking out what controller the Vertex series uses. I own a Core V1 series from OCZ and that suffers from the stuttering problem.
Some of the higher ended (read: more expensive) use the better controller. I think the one to avoid is JMicron Controller, read the fantastic article at AnandTech for a proper understanding of SSDs. Real eye opener.
The Vertex doesn't use the JMicron controller.
if you're wanting the Velociraptor for speed, just go for SSD. the random access times make programs open much much faster.
the boot up time for W7 isn't much less than my last RAID0 with 2 mechanical drives but the access times for programs and games and stuff is amazing.
when i went between my netbook and my PC i didn't notice a HUGE difference, but now i have the SSDs i go on my netbook and it feels incredibly sluggish now.
SSD FTW
