Overclocking an AMD 64 3200+
I'm trying to overclock my AMD 3200+ so that it's not strangling my 8800gt just so much and was wondering if there are any software programmes to do so.
I've tried manually by upping the FSB but I've never managed to get it stable above 210mhz (stock 200) x 10. It was a good motherboard in it's time (DFI Infinity) and was designed for overclocking, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong, I'm guessing it's memory timings, but I really don't have a notion about them. Anyone any advice?
Re: Overclocking an AMD 64 3200+
You'll probably need to find a way to reduce your memory ratio - there should be an option in the BIOS which is likely to be set to AUTO, and you need to set it as low as possible to avouid overclocking the RAM at the same time as the Processor. What's the actual clock speed of the 3200+?
Re: Overclocking an AMD 64 3200+
yeah I had an idea it was to do with memory timings. The stock speed is 2.0ghz (200mhz x 10) but apparently have got it up to 2.5ghz on stock easy enough.
Re: Overclocking an AMD 64 3200+
Yeah - because you have an even mutliplier the RAM will automatically run at its rated speed (odd & fractional multipliers run the RAM slower than rated with Athlons... it's a whole thing), so any boost you make to the FSB will also overclock the RAM. There should be an option in the BIOS like memory speed or memory ratio, and it's likely to have values like "Auto", "DDR2 400", "DDR2 533", "DDR2 667" etc. You want to set that as low as possible to ensure that overclokcing the CPU doesn't overclock the RAM as well.
Re: Overclocking an AMD 64 3200+
okay I set the the memory to 166mhz which put it at a 2:3 ratio. I can get it to boot up to XP and run the far cry 2 bench mark 3 times when i set the cpu to 230 x10 mhz but it won't get to windows at 2.5 or 2.4, isn't that rather poor for an athlon 64?

yeah you are either really unlucky or doing something wrong
