Power supply for new build

Hi guys,

I've been darting about hexus forums quite a lot recently trying to get some good advice on my new build for 2009.

Now im stumped on a PSU...

I need to be able to power a core i7 965EX, 2 BFGgtx280 OC, 2 SATA HDD and a Blu ray drive.
Will probably be getting the Asus Rampage II Extreme also but still not sure on mobo...

Not only this but i would like to be able to hide the cables behind the motherboard plate as seen in this vid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs9zHlRABXw (will be getting that same case also)

I have tried to do this in my current build but the cables just arent long enough, and i dont want to end up buying a PSU with tiny cables. I know its kind of a wierd reason not to buy a PSU but when it comes to my computer my Obsesive compulsive side comes out and everything need to look and be AWESOME!

Any suggestions?

Well, I'm using the Corsair HX 520... in a Lian Li PC-A17 case...

All of my cords are hidden on the side of my case...

The HX series is a really good PSU, from reviews, and from my experience.

And since it's modular, you can swap what you don't need out. I think one of the higher power PSU's in the HX series should do just fine. I've got no problem stretching the cables along the side of my case and up through the holes of the base... You can't see any cords anywhere when I open my tower...

I don't see why the HX wouldn't work...

I agree that the HX520w is a great PSU as I have one too. However you may also want to consider the HX620w or one of the Enermax 600w+ modulars as you are running two GTX280 cards. I would have a look around at how much power your set-up will consume on peak load too.

Also just seen a vid showing a guy with the same case and psu, all wired hidden perfectly.

Might go for the 850 model, im doing some major future proofing this year so a bit of extra room on the psu will cover me for any tri sli should i decide to

Yeah 600W seems a bit meagre for that setup to me, an 850W as you suggested is probably the best way to go.

I have actually got an OCZ 1000w but its incredibly noise... and the wires are tiny. They barely reach over my GTX280 to the 4pin on the mobo, lol.

The 850w will probably give you some headroom. Make sure you get one with a good efficiency if the premium is not too high!

I don't know as much as some people, but I've heard from a reliable source that such huge wattage psu's are unnecessary and perhaps even detrimental to performance?

May want to think about it... Do you *really* need more than 680w?

I think the only time 1000w would be necessary is in those crazy science lab conditions with NO2

i agree, i don't think i wil ever need 1000w. the only reason i got the OCZ 1000w was because it had some pretty good reviews (aside from noise which i dont give a crap about nehoo) and was mega cheap at the time. lol.

Man this build is gona take me a while... i know what i want now but im buying it all in £500 chunks...
rent bills and staying alive is expensive.

Decided to go for the i7 240 instead of 965, as all i really do is game and compose so i dont really have need of such an extreme cpu. and if the 240 ever DOES start to stress out then thes always the option to OC Heard some good things about people overclocking these beasts to 4ghz+

Hmm. if you are considering furture upgrade to tri-SLI, not sure why you would want that unless you want to work with crazy resolutions the 850W might not be enough. it would be borderline. i'd say get 1000W PSU. consider the efficiency as well. according to guru3d review of GTX280, its TDP is 237W thats about 20Amps for card alone. review your 12V Amps for the system.
Or if you want, you can always get dedicated PSU for your graphics card alone.

A moment of thought now would save some headache later
