I was at an auction house today, and was rather surprised to find a lot consisting of a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 1705 laptop, Office 2007 Home and Student and a Lexmark all in one printer among the usual heap of antiques and general junk, all unopened. I'm fairly sure that I'll be able to get it for a song, and therefore wondered what people think would be a reasonable price to pay. The specs are as follows:
- Celeron M 440
- 512MB RAM
- 80GB HDD
- Vista Basic
I was thinking that I could get a Core 2 T5500 and 2GB of RAM for about £120 from Scan, and therefore bring it up to a semi decent spec, especially if I stick Ubuntu on it in a dual boot config; I'll only be using it for note taking at school, light websurfing and as a rather oversized MP3 player for while I'm working.
How easy do you think it would be to execute such an upgrade (I've built my own desktop, but have never owned or ventured inside a laptop). Given the specs, what do you think the maximum I should bid for it is? I'd also be interested to hear the views of anyone who owns one.
EDIT: Also, am I right in thinking that I could safely overwrite the recovery partition on it and use an OEM Vista HP disc to reinstall Vista Basic should I need to do so?
