would adobe cs4 use a nvidia gtx280, or would it need to be a workstation card for it to use it?

    Re: video editing

Apparently yes. You don't need a Quadro.

    Re: video editing

There is a menu on Photoshop (and no doubt other CS4 apps) that tells you what sort of performance you can expect to get out of your card. I can tell you for a fact that this even works on my macbook with a 9400M in it - so you definitely don't need anything fancy.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe_photoshop.html (i realise you want to do video editing)

After Effects CS4 taps the GPU to apply effects like depth-of-field and turbulent noise in real time, while Premiere Pro CS4 accelerates "motion, opacity, color, and image distortion" with the GPU.

Premiere Pro CS4 users with Quadro professional GPUs will also be able to grab Elemental's RapiHD plug-in, which uses CUDA to speed up high-definition video encoding significantly. According to Nvidia, compressing a two-hour high-definition video to H.264 can take around 28 hours on a CPU, but RapiHD can cut that to just 2.5-3 hours.
