New Quiet PC Build, ~£1000 exc vat
Hi,
I've decided to treat myself as my current pc is on its last legs, I'm looking for a new one somewhere around the £1,000 EXC VAT mark, ideally to last me a good few years. I'm looking for a machine that will cope pretty well with games, though I don't play much I like them to run well when I do! The other aim is for it to be quiet, I'll be sleeping with it on usually a few feet away, so some of the choices I have made are to keep it as close to silent as possibly whilst still performing. I've been out of the game a while but have spent a good few hours researching this, and here's what I've come up with:
Code:
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz 218.25
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 Express Socket 1366 Motherboard 136.71
nVidia GeForce GTX 275 896MB PCI-E 2.0 Ret 173.8
OCZ 6GB PC3-12800 DDR3 1600Mhz Platinum Triple Channel (3x2GB) 73.95
OCZ 120GB Vertex Series SATA II 2.5 SSD Solid State Drive 269.95
1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 SATA2 7200RPM 32MB cache 61.95
Cooler Master Sileo 500 Black Silent Case 56.86
525W Enermax MODU82+ 68.68
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 25.99
Xigmatek Crossbow ACK-I7361 5.49
Any comments or advice is welcome, I'm looking to buy this sometime next week, the prices I've got listed are the cheapest I was able to find, the Scythe Mugen 2 and Nexus Value 430 prices includes delivery, was pretty hard to track them down mainstream so they are ordered individually.
Re: New Quiet PC Build, ~£1000 exc vat
I'd switch the PSU for something like a Corsair or Seasonic unit personally, maybe with 500-600w to cope with any expansion/overclocking. They have the added advantage of being very quiet too - mine is almost silent.
Where are you ordering it from? Just out of curiosity really, but Scan do free shipping for regular members (20+ posts to qualify) so they may be able to save you something there?
I'm sure some of the other members will be able to say more on the i7 aspect, but it doesn't seem you've picked any RAM?

BeQuiet PSU ftw if you wan't silence!
You could also get a better case with better airflow and some slow running fans!
Re: New Quiet PC Build, ~£1000 exc vat
Hi,
You are indeed right about the RAM, I'd chosen it but forgot to put it on my spreadsheet!
it was:
OCZ 6GB PC3-12800 DDR3 1600Mhz Platinum Triple Channel (3x2GB) 73.95
I'll update the initial post to reflect it.
I was basing my PSU choice off of silentpcreview's PSU noise rankings (can't link due to post #), it is apparently very highly rated, but I suppose as I could potentially get SLI in the future it may be worth spending a little more.
The 525W Enermax MODU82+ was an alternative I had pencilled in, was thinking of saving a few quid but I guess it makes more sense to go with that, think I'll update the spec! :)

Superb choice.
They are exceptionally quiet.

:) that's great to hear, think I'm fairly settled on this spec now, only thing's I wouldnt mind changing are perhaps the case (though the sound deadening does seem appealing) and I'd prefer a 2 platter 1TB hdd for better noise/power, but I don't fancy the barracuda 7200.12 after all the seagate problems, and the reviews seem quite mixed too with bad write performance.

The Scythe Kama Angle cooler seems very quiet to me (I can't really hear my PC when it's on) and might be easier to get hold of...

For silence the Antec p182 is probably the best case out there.

I've found a stockist of the Mugen 2 (only one mind!) in the UK and after reading the xbitlabs i7 coolers comparison of 15 coolers it seems to meet my needs perfectly really, great cooling and close to silent, the Kama Angle does look good but it isn't listed on their site as LGA1366 comptible so i think I'll stick to the Mugen.

Love the look of this case, but I think i'd begrude spending almost twice as much, it's also rather big and heavy which I don't really fancy. Running a silverstone sugo at the moment and will be quite sad to see the back of it but glad of the silence I'm sure!

Seconded. I'd check here for quiet compoments. The Enermax Modu82+ is top of the pile at the mopment though I don't think they have tested the mreo recent ( and more expensive) Enermax Revolution
Re: New Quiet PC Build, ~£1000 exc vat
My Modu82+ is exceptionally quiet. I'm sure the liberty eco is up to standard though.

Xigmatek HDT-S1283 for the cooler, much cheaper than the Mugen and silent. You can get a kit for attatching it to an i7 board, or buy the "Dark Knight" version which includes the i7 kit :)
Might be worth tracking down an Inno3D iChill GTX-275 too. It's got the Arctic Cooling Accelero XXX fan strapped to it already, silent gaming without voiding the card's warranty.
Re: New Quiet PC Build, ~£1000 exc vat
With SSD still at a price premium i would personally go with two Samsung F1's and spend the money elsewhere.

Thanks for the advice, Xigmatek HDT-S1283 and Xigmatek Crossbow ACK-I7361 switched in for the Mugen. Saves a few quid and it seems a lot of people are happy with the Xigmatek.
The Inno3D iChill GTX-275 sounds like it will be great too after reading a review of the 260, not seen it available anywhere yet though so I'll have to see what the price difference is, I doubt it's worth spending more than £30 extra on really
