    New Processor Decision

Help! I cannot decide, despite looking at the hexus review, and many others, if to get a new 3.2ghz P4 or a 3200+ A64 processor.
I could get a nice AGP 8x, PCI 5x board of savastore for a mere £40!
And then the processor from Cpucity for £200 inc VAT... would that give me better performance than a 3200+ A64?
Keep in mind before u reply:
    >Cost of each processor
    >Performance Gains/losses
    > Overheating problems with either processors??!!

Imho it's too soon to go for 64bit. Wait a bit for the better versions to come out otherwise you'll regret it later.

IMO if you are buying a processor now then get a 64 bit, the performance is on a par with the Intel offering and you get the fun of playing with the new 64bit windows when its released.

Why not stay 32-Bit until 64-Bit actually becomes worth having ? Seems a waste of money buying it right now !?!

I'd have said that when you can get equivalent performance in 32-bit apps to a 32-bit only processor, AND have compatibility w/64-bit when it happens, then the waste of money would be buying a 32-bit only CPU. That said, I wouldn't buy it now, I'd wait until the A64 socket changes to 939-pin, and buy then.

Does anyone know how long this will be (Rough estimate will be good enough)

i think they've delayed it untill the autumn or atleast delayed mass production of it till then

also if you were going for the a64 u might aswell well wait for the nf250 boards to appear in a few weeks for some agp/pci lock fun

I am not sure if I can wait until the autumn is a bit far away. Any suggestion what Murphmanl and I should do now? I have this horrible feeling I could just wait and wait.

32bit systems will be able to run those games fine anyway. No need still. I s'pose the majority of people know that HL2 and Doom3 runs on 32-bit systems

I think I've decided - since most of u have gone off topic and completely forgottern i mentioned the P4, i think ill get a 3.2ghz P4 for £200 off the net, and then a decent mobo for £40 that has 5.1 audio, AGP 8x, Ethernet Onboard and 5 PCI slots... there is no point constantly waiting for 64bit when 32 bit will see us through just fine for a long time either way, then in a few years when compulsory we can upgrade to 64bit.

If you can wait, I'd say wait for now. If you absolutely have to buy something, then I'd recommend a nice AMD Athlon Barton 2500+ Mobile or, if you have slightly more cash, a P4. Not sure about pricing differences, but heard that 2.8C is much better value that 3.2C.

If I were you, I'd get something that runs newer games well, but not something expensive. That way, it'll be good enough at least until the new stuff comes out, and then you can the new technology.

Sorry for the incredibly long-winded post!

    Mike

Edit: Just took a look at http://www.cpucity.co.uk. The 3.2C is £197.40, compared to just £125.74 for the 2.8C. In my opinion, 400mhz is not worth £70!

barton 2500-m and overclock to 2.5ghz - gives you pretty much on par performance with a fx51 (well obviously less, but not by too much considering the price diff !)

70 quid, get a 40 quid mobo and your laughin, in a year or 2 youll sell it , and lose what? 50 quid max id say, then upgrade

You'd be mad to spend £200 on a Pentium 3.2C mate, get yourself a nice shiny new Mobile Barton 2500+ for £70 and clock it to 2.5GHz. It will whip the pants of the Pentium for price to performance ratio. Especially with all the new changes coming at the end of this year since you'll want to upgrade again probably, so this'll cost you less too!

I have just read the Hexus review and am now intrigued. What Motherboard would people recommend?

This will be my first journey into Overclcoking is there anywhere people can suggest I can learn about it?
