    Opteron or AMD-64???

    Hi all,

I'm beginning to look into getting a new setup. Currently running a SocA Sempron 2500

What is the difference between the AMD Opteron and Athlon 64 processors? Especially as they are both soc 939 now.

Also whats the difference between the different series Opterons? like the 1-way, 2-way thing?

I've noticed on these pages some people reccommending Opterons over Athlons-64's whats the reason behind this, and are they 100% x86 compatible? ie run Windows XP and all games software OK - I'm guessing they're 32-bit backwards compatible like Athlon 64's??

    Cheers all!

2 way opteron means their for dual slot(as in, two seperate CPU's) mobos, 4-way means 4 or 8 cpus. So you'd want a 1XX series, or 1-way.

Opterons are better if you intend to overclock, since they overclock incredibly well, but if you're not intending on that, stick to A64, and let some other sod get an Opteron(they're in short supply).

All Opterons and A64's are x86 chips, so fully compatable in all the ways you ask.

If you intend on overclocking, an opteron will go very very far, but if you're definately not, just get an A64.

Get an opteron if you can, second hand values of venices have really dropped since the opterons came out.

Opterons will soon be out of production, your loss will be minimal once you come to sell it.

Most will overclock to 2.8GHz, operton is the best option atm

yeah Opteron's should hold there Value better, and there just better Silicon, id go for one even if your not going to overclock much, as there still pretty good value aren't they?
